WIRELESS WON'T CONNECT UPSTAIRS - OK DOWNSTAIRS

I am sure there is a simple explanation for this!

My talktalk connection is through ethernet cable and talktalk's own adsl router downstairs (which has given me no probs since i signed up 12 months ago).

I wanted my son to have access on his laptop in his room so I reset my previous wireless router (Zyxel 660) and put in the talktalk settings and plugged the dongle into the laptop and it worked fine downstairs.

However, when I moved the Zyxel upstairs to the bedroom telephone socket all i get is the flashing DSL light?? The downstairs PC/router was not on at the time.

1) Any ideas?
2) Could i use the Zyxel with ethernet downstairs and the dongle upstairs?
3) Is this problem because the bedroom socket is not the master?

Any help greatly appreciated....

Are you saying you had two routers connected to the line simultaneously? If so, that won't work and would explain the flashing light.

The PC was off downstairs and no power was going to the adsl router but would the phone jack need to be pulled from the master socket downstairs?

It could be your extension wiring. Have you tried the Zyxel plugged in downstairs and you son in his room?

Did you unplug the downstairs router?

To be certain I would say yes

NOTE: If you have an ADSL faceplate then the ADSL signal is only present at the faceplate or dedicated ADSL extensions you have.

That may well screw it up. Unplug it then try again. The router doesn't have to go into a master but it does need to go into an unfiltered socket.

With your Zyxcel connected downstairs wher it was working there is every chance that the wireless will work upstairs - that is what it was designed for.

If this is IPstream be wary of trying too many experiments because you could end up being rewarded by an increased target margin lasting weeks as well as an IP profile close to dialup for a few days.

That was your mistake! You should have just moved your son upstairs.

What I think you need is:

1) A wireless router downstairs plugged into the main socket, configured with your TalkTalk username and password and with a wireless SSID and key.
Is talktalk's own adsl router wireless? If so, that should do.
Or you probably could use the Zyxel.

2) Your downstairs PC connected to the router by Ethernet cable.

3) Your son's laptop fitted with the wireless adaptor (dongle) configured to the router's SSID and key.

Then he should be able to use the laptop anywhere in the house, signal permitting.
Try it first near the router and then range further afield.

This is just like my set up except I'm using a Netgear router.

Yes

I thought the TalkTalk router was wireless capable anyway? My brother's certainly is. Do you mean a TalkTalk modem?
