I doubt it. The whingers will whinge about anything to do with the iPhone. Even if it could grant three wishes each day they'd still complain.

It's because so many of them are Windows Vista users.

I don't doubt it was a huge task getting the OS on to the iPhone, that's fairly irrelevant though, they must have sat down and worked out a feature set first and for me personally, and obviously an awful lot of other people, they worked on the wrong set. The more rabid Mac user is easily blinded by bling, and that's what they seemed to aim for, missing out on a whole raft of more useful features than things like GPS and Google maps.

I know that MMS isn't really used in the US, so I guess that comes into it to an extent. Not to mention their Draconian controls placed on developing apps and the ridiculous provider locks (not that they are alone, should be made illegal!).

Apple have kind of pulled a Microsoft, released a partly developed piece of kit (and very buggy in places, Safari pre-2.2 was very buggy) and added to it over time. Guess that's what happens when profits and turn over, quite rightly, come first.

Worked though, I have one and it's a great phone, having used a lot of smartphones over the years I guess I'm just able to look at it a bit more subjectively and see what was missing in comparison to other smartphones. Blackberry have done the same recently, the Storm is an awful bit of kit, released to early, no wireless, slow, call drop outs, locked to Vodafone etc etc, same sort of stuff that happened to the iPhone.

Come 3.0 it'll be the best phone I've ever owned (actually, it probably already is, still want more though wink), there's some great features in there. Once the jailbreak is released and I can get a web server on there that is smile

Trust me, getting an OS designed for desktops onto a phone is a huge undertaking. ARM processors are quite different to Intel. You have loads of drivers to write etc..

It took OpenMoko a long time to get a working phone OS. That's with some embedded Linux experts on the case.

The Mach kernel didn't run well on servers originally, so having it run well on a phone is an achievement.

Oh get lost. The average mac user is every bit as demanding as anyone else.

Apple focussed on the 90% of features used by 90% of users - but underestimated what a whiny, moany selfish crowd the other 10% is.

e useful features than things like GPS and Google maps.

A mate of mine - who hasn't user a Mac since he worked at an architect in the mid-80s and is the least geeky person I know (he wants to push a button and have it work) - got an iPhone recently and loves it for the maps - 'cos he is out on the road a lot and the locate me button is a Godsend.

If Shakespeare......had a blog it would be like this.

Mmm, it's awesome, isn't it? smile

And the ability to turn up pretty much anywhere, press 'find me', and then 'find pub' is phenomenal.

Thinking about it, there's probably a good pub guide app somewhere... edit: or maybe not. Does anyone know of a good food/pub guide app?

I don't see the bling factor anyway. Sure, it has animations and the handset is well designed. But the actual interface is very simple. Almost like the Palm OS with a nice facelift.

Nobody really wants a full featured PDA like their PSION used to be. People don't want to do scripting and programming on the move.

For those that want to do that Apple isn't the place to be, get some Linux thing or Nokia tablet.

A bit confused about the bluetooth changes. Will a user be able to send and receive files from a computer?

I believe it's all been perfectly planned by Apple. They knew that by releasing the original iPhone with so many 'standard' features missing that a core group people would still buy it regardless and set the ball rolling. Then with the iPhone 3G they added a bit more, but crucially made the phone a lot cheaper to buy. A lot of people bought that one, despite many 'standard' features still missing. I was one of them, and I can honestly say that I don't want to switch to another phone manufacturer now. The only reason I'll get another phone is if Apple release a brand new one.

Fact remains that even with many 'standard' features missing people still think it's one of the better phones out there. So now with the 3.0 software update it's going to be the best phone out there bar none, and all they had to do was update the software! Very very clever indeed.

Apple didn't drop the ball on this. They knew exactly what they were doing.

The average Mac user != the more rabid Mac user.

You could take out the 'Mac' part and insert pretty much any company, those that are happy with anything they are given and think that anyone that critisises in any way is a moron.

What's wrong with wanting improvements?
