AVG 8 "License number could not be fully verified"

[link to this post]

Mornin all smile

I've been running AVG Free for quite some time now & all's been fine. On boot up this morning though, I get an AVG pop-up saying "License number could not be fully verified... This error is usually caused by a corrupt installation. If you see this error for the first time, try to reinstall AVG. Otherwise please contact AVG technical support."

The pop-up gives me the option to reinstall or close AVG. If I click reinstall, it just takes me to the "Activate your AVG License" screen & I didn't think you needed a license number for AVG Free-? If I do have one, any ideas where I might find it? Can anyone help before I contact AVG technical support as suggested? crazy

Thanks in advance, Ben.

In short, run the AVG remover and then reinstall, it seems like spybot S&D may be the cause of this conflict so make sure to disable that too. Having said that, on that thread the problem seemed to come back.

I would start with a full uninstallation and reinstallation anyhow smile

And isn't your signature missing a line, I thought it used to say "merely, there is some i'd like to see before others" wink

Having used AVG for about 8 years I have now junked it in favour of Avast. AVG 8 is far too buggy for me especially the way it seems to fall down on updates from its server.

Hi, try Avast! The latest version 4.8. I use it with Windows XP Pro and get no problems whatsoever.

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-...

I download it without skins to keep it very light, it starts with the simple interface skin which is the default one that looks like a media player, to change that, from "Program Settings" uncheck [Enable skins for Simple User Interface] and you get a real plain easy to use interface and each morning you have a friendly voice with, ding-dong Virus database has been updated. smile

Read the reviews and download...

Hi Ian,

Funnily enough that is exactly the same as me!

We used to use AVG not only for ourselves but our customers too, but then as you say, it started to get very buggy and was coming up with all sorts of errors, normally during or straight after an update.

I have moved all our customers slowly away from AVG to avast.
It just doesn't appear to have any problems at all and is extreamly easy to use in both basic and advanced modes..........

Regards,
Trevor

I see one of the PC magazine giveaways this month is 60day trial of ESET. Might be worth looking at that. of course you could easily use avast like others have said - it even protects your email output from spammers by querying why you need to send identical emails to more than 4 people!, haven't seen any other AV do that.
