How do you know if you're on ADSL2+ ?

[link to this post]

Hi all,

Never sure what the stats would be for ADSL2+ (though I am sure the give away is the upstream speed)

The Nertgear router currently says:

Connection Speed 5920 kbps 640 kbps
Line Attenuation 39.0 db 24.0 db
Noise Margin 7.8 db 7.0 db

Is that ADSL2+ ? And if not would it support ADSL2+ ? And how would I go about getting Sky to switch me over ?

TIA for any help.

Regards,

Adam Brunt

Sky won't usually put people on ADSL2+ unless their line can reliably sync above about 7000kbps on ADSL, because there's little to be gained speed-wise, and it can introduce instability. The performance of an ADSL line drops off rapidly once you go over about 3km in line length, and with an attenuation of 39dB, I'd guess your line is longer than that.

That looks like plain old ADSL to me. 39 attn on ADSL2+ would give you around 12Mbps.
If you're on sky max you should ask support to put you on ADSL2+. You should get around 9-12Mbps.
Your line length is about 2.8km.

Probably ADSL1.
If you divide the downstream connection speed by 32, and the result is a whole number (in your case, 185), there's a very strong chance (near 100% certainty) you're on ADSL1 (as ADSL1 can only connect in 32kbps steps).

So line noise has nothing to do with it then ?

To do with what? Line length? laugh

Agreed.
If the OP is getting just shy of 6Mbps, but only has a noise margin of 7.8dB, there's no way he'll get 12Mbps from ADSL2+ (unless he works out why his line isn't connecting at 8Mbps - just like a 39dB line should).

Maybe if you know so much, you could explain why one of my lines has an attenuation of 42dB and syncs at 3Mbps, and the other one has a 46dB attenuation and syncs at 4.5Mbps ? They're both feeding the same premises, and go to the same exchange ?

Do they have the same target noise margin?
Are both routers plugged into the 'test' socket (inside the BT master), or using an ADSL filtered face-plate?
Does either (or both) circuits have extension wiring?
Does one of the circuits have a longer length of overhead wire?
Are both using identical routers?
Is one of the circuits nearer to a TV, low-energy lamp, etc.?
