Clever Shaping?

[link to this post]

Noticed when I do speed tests they are 5-6mb, but when downloading it starts at 5-6mb and after a few seconds goes to 3mb for the duration.

Is that to fool speed tests or because I'm still on the training period?

MTU 1458
Connection Speed 9213 kbps 945 kbps
Line Attenuation 40.5db 23.5db
Noise Margin 7.2db 14.4db

It can just be the server you are downloading from is congested or the path to you has some congestion.

Does this happen if you download something from microsoft or apple, as i found both of them to give full speeds all the time

I've found that some browsers begin downloading a file whilst prompting for name/location. This causes the download meter to report a much higher throughput for the first few seconds because the timer starts after the file has already started downloading. It then settles down to something realistic.

Have you tried testing with a different browser/application?

Adding to DougM you could see if this is happening by downloading the TBBMeter application from this site - that would show exactly what is being downloaded on both testers and normal downloads - that way you see the real speed and not the notional speed that gets reported normally.
