Drop in speed

[link to this post]

Odd one this.
I was with A&A for yonks and even when the line went over to ADSL2+

Could usually get around 10.5mb down and 1mb up.

Moved to Sky Unlimited LLU and started getting 11.5mb down and 1mb up.

Was like this for a good few months and then I started getting disconnects overnight. This would drop the speeds right down. I was syncing around 13350 and overnight, down to about 9057.

I asked Sky to stick me on they 'gamer profile'. They did and nothing improved. So I stuck with it for a few months and eventually have asked them to take me off the gamer profile to see what happens.

Now I'm getting:

Connection Speed 10237 kbps 605 kbps
Line Attenuation 30.5db 17.7db
Noise Margin 7.4db 17.6db

A good 2mb down. Rebooting the router makes no difference. Sky did say my line was now at 10mb and would need to stablise out. It might go up more they said. I'm thinking - hang on, it used to be better than that!!! It hasn't improved in over 48 hours. What the hell gives???

All my microfilters have been changed......

looks like you're suffering from lots of noise on the line. This is reducing your SNR Margin so you're not getting the 15Megs your attenuation should give you. If you can reduce the noise, your sync will improve.

Wasn't like that before. This is something Sky have done.

You've never synced at 15Mbps, have you??

No, but I used to sync at 13350 solidly. My speed was a consistent 11.5mb.

Since taking me off the gamer profile - they've fixed my line speed at this new one it seems.

So your connection was under-performing wrt the attenuation - due to noise?

As you're not on a gaming profile, DLM will have capped the line to reduce errors.

What you should consider doing is to get your stats with only the router connected, connected to the test socket.

Oh OK - so you're saying my line has always underperformed?

How do you get stats from router-only - don't you need a PC to see the results?

Also - I don't have a test socket - I have an old line jack as the master(I think). I'm not sure the ring wire has been disconnected on all the (multiple) extensions in the house.

Sorry, I meant only the router connected to the phone line - no phones, no extension wiring, no sky box. Tricky without a test socket tbh.

Well I disconnected the ring wire from all sockets. I've not had a drop in speed now for 7 days. Told Sky this, asked them to put the upload speed back to 1mb - but instead, they've just said they're starting DLM again.....and you've guessed it, the upload speed doesn't increase, despite the fact that at one point it was fine at 1mb. Ah well.

You need to phone up again then , as with all things , some customer service operators will be better than others , some will make more effort . Keep going until you get what you want .

Mind you that's only if it fits with in Sky one size fits all ethos .

With TalkTalk , not as bad as some might have you believe
