Router question

[link to this post]

Am moving back to Sky after 1 year of problems with Virgin. Do Sky still lock the username/pw into their routers and is it still possible to obtain these and use your own router?

Yes they do lock you in, however you can unofficially extract the username and password from the router using this for use with your own router.

How ever be aware that sky now use the MER type of encapsulation which means you need a router that supports this.

Last October, my Sky router failed. (Unusual fault, by the way - the ethernet ports failed although wireless worked fine.) The router had been connecting via MER for some time. While I waited for the replacement router to arrive I reverted to my old SpeedTouch 585v5, which worked perfectly fine via PPoA. Of course Sky support may have changed the line config. temporarily to allow this, but they did not mention it. The replacement Sky router uses MER, of course.
