Unstable Sky Broadband Connection

[link to this post]

Moved to my house in Dec 17. I have been a Sky customer for over 10 years. On moving I upgraded to Sky Q, 2 mini boxed and Sky Q router. The install was fine once it settled down. I am getting 40Mb/10Mb download/upload with 33Mb download on Wifi channel. The Openreach says the line will support 80Mb, I am about 50m to a green DSLAM fibre box on the roadside.

Last 2 weeks I have having terrible episodes of broadband dropouts (60 on one afternoon last week). The Wifi says up the middle green light does out. I have been looking at the router log files, the router will reconnect and then re-train. Sometimes it cannot recover the dropout and I need to power the box on and off cycle. A Level 2 Tech guys at Sky says he can still see a fault on my line but Openreach have they not fixed it (maybe each visit does one thing)? Lats chap was a voice only and left with the broadband now working, so far I have had 2 Openreach visits. A fibre engineer has been booked 2 days ago but not shown up yet ?

I would like to setup thinkbroadband monitoring as this it an intermittent one, I cannot seem use the IP address it says too many monitoring. I will post the router stats when I get home today, from what I read the downstream/upstream noise is very high about 19-21 db if a recall but it fluctuates ? Router was up all night last night, the moment I fired up laptop if fell over at 7:52am, I also checked my voice dial tone first thing as well and it is still crackling... Was it a coincidence that it fell over when I picked up my hand set to check the dial tone for noise or when I put some traffic on the line ? It has now been up and down several times over breakfast !!!

What should I be looking for or how do I try to help myself direct these investigations...

As you are on a 40Mb package with a potential 80Mb available your noise margin will be high - and should be as it is all that margin that would give you the leeway to go faster if you went to a higher package.

It does sound like a fault given the telephone noise and therefore continue chasing your provider (if there is audible noise as you say then it can be done as a phone fault which would most likely resolve the broadband issues). There are faults that can cause broadband to drop when the phone is picked up or rings.

I'm guessing the problem with the TBB monitoring may be down to someone else already having a monitor on that IP - presumably because IPs are dynamic and so you have got an IP that someone previously had a monitor set on. MrSaffron may be able to fix this.

I had a couple of faults on my FTTC line last year and they were both due to bad joints. As I could hear noise on a new analogue phone I reported them as voice faults and they were resolved by Openreach voice engineers.

Once the line was quiet the FTTC settled down and has been fine ever since.

Further to my post yesterday. We had Openreach engineer for 2 hrs yesterday. I think there were multiple faults, based somewhere from the line in from the outside wall connection to the interior master socket. All replaced and engineer left fairly confident it should be sorted.

When I got home I started BQM (see below). The connection was excellent but overnight and early the morning there were a few drop outs logged by the router. Why ? The Sky Q router renegotiates the same IP address so BQM continues OK.

Is this just settling in (training ?) why a burst of drop outs when we wake-up ? I don't want to is sign if off as OK if there is still a lingering issue but it is now clearly much better and the crackling in the line is gone.

How does it look to the pro's out there...

Hi,

Am I right in thinking the voice line is quiet now?

After our fault was repaired the DLM seem to be quite cautious about making changes and it took several days for the speed to increase. We had several drop-outs and re-syncs during those days.

On it only yesterday morning ( 21 Mar ) that DLM brought the downstream SNR to 1.6 and our download speed to 80MB/s - our fault was fixed in the first week of January.

Yes, the phone line is now quiet.
BQM not so good today about noon-1pm. No-one was at home?

https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/...

Got home at 5pm and green light was out on router, I needed to power cycle the router. Restarted and was assigned new IP address so I have set up a new BQM.

There was me thinking it was fixed. I got 12 hours of up time and then look what happens. Started last night at 11am. Look at this morning in the router log since 5am. Getting up time of about 5min, it has got a bit better as the morning has gone on...

I spoke with Sky this morning OR closed the fault job and so they need to reopen it again on the OR side for broadband check !!! The phone line quality is definitely better, do I have a new fault.

You've already posted this in the fibre section this morning. It is likely people could try helping in both sections and cause confusion - really it is better just to stick to one thread and cross posting is against the rules of the site.

I am sorry for the double posting, I am getting very stressed by the situation. I was perhaps hoping a different expert may read one forum over the other.

I have the Netgear router from Sky and I am pretty familiar with it. I never had any issues with the wireless connectivity but I can suggest a few steps to try:

1. Change the channel that the router is broadcasting wi-fi on.
2. Try it temporarily without wireless security
3. Change the type of wireless security

You can also call to the sky customer service number 0844 385 1222 for more technical support.

Post back after trying the above steps.

Two things spring to mind

1. You have all new Sky Q Equipment
2. You have moved properties

Possibility:
1. Equipment is faulty. Get a replacement Q Hub

2. Do you have powerline enabled? If so, turn it off, it can cause dropouts and hence Sky disabled the feature on the Q router, but some users manually turn it back on.

3. Line fault as discussed.

Given the line crackling I am opting for possibility 3.

Be very careful about ringing customer numbers posted by random people on the internet.

Find a number here: https://contactus.sky.com/
