Very basic talk talk installation help

[link to this post]

Hey guys

Now I'm pretty good on a comp, but am trying to help my 80+ year old grandfather install the talktalk broadband which he has just received.

Now he has managed to plug in the modem and get the filters sorted so i told him to put in the cd and follow the instructions. But he has hit a problem that i can't help him with cos I have never seen the screens.

He is on the first step, where it tells you to close any other programs etc, but he says there is no box to tick, or next button, or arrow or anything to move onto the next step.

So I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it is I should be telling him to look for, even a screenshot would be great. I was trying to get him to email me a "print screen" shot, but he couldn't find the print screen button on the keyboard, but it is a basic laptop so may be hidden.

Any help greatly appreciated

Cheers

If your father is 80+ he might have set the screen resolution quite low to make the icons etc. easier to see. If the laptop is old then it might not support higher resolutions anyway. That being the case a lot of newer installation programs assume you have at least 800x600 (or higher) resolution and the buttons disappear off the bottom of the screen.
Find out if he's got the resolution set low (say 640x480) then see if he can set it higher for the duration of the installation.

If it actually mentions the button to press next it might be worth trying holding down the "Alt" key and the initial letter of the button that needs pressing (eg Alt+N for "Next").

Good point i'll get him to lookat settings, think they wil be ok tho, it is a basic laptop but is only 1 yr old so should be able to handle the resolution.

Not sure if the shortcut will work tho if there any a few screens to go through

Cheers for the advice

Sounds like he is on the first screen of the CD. It opens in a small window,
There is a NEXT button on the bottom right. of the "assist and go" window.
A Completion Status indicator is on the bottom left.
"Close any running applications" means to close anything you programmes running. Close them with the X at the top right of the programs window. Standard Windows stuff.

Come back if you need help with more windows

Just a thought....!

If he has pop ups blocked then he may be getting an error in a new windows but it's been blocked as a pop up... also I dont think he should have plugged his modem in until the setup runs then tells you to plug it in...

Beware the wrath of the Haggishacker.....;0)
