How does the 40gb cap charge work?

[link to this post]

My neighbour is letting a house out to students. He has agree to include broadband. If he gets the basic talktalk package and they exceed the 40gb cap what happens? Does it shut off or slow down or does he get charged £4 for another 40gb?

Thanks

Im guessing that if you don't add the £4 boost before, then they have the right to do near abouts anything. Friend of mine on TalkTalk says that you get charged per GB if it is severely over the cap. 40GB should be enough for students, what would they be doing appart from studying? tongue

Best to inform the students that there is a limit on the usage and that if they go over they will be liable for any extra charges.

My understanding is that you get charged £5 as soon as you hit 40Gb (the limit wasn't so strictly monitored until recently, AFAIK). However, I also read that this policy is operated on a 3 strikes and you're out rule. So, if 40Gb is likely to be broken regularly, obviously the £4 boost for 80Gb usage is recommended.

If that's the case " I also read that this policy is operated on a 3 strikes and you're out rule " would make it very easy to break the 18 moth contract .
Could you post a link to where you where reading about this 3 strikes rule , as it would be good to have the facts ..

Hello all,

If you go over the 40Gb limit you will be sent a letter advising of this fact you will also be offered the "Mega Download Boost" for £4 which takes you to a monthly allowance of 80Gb.

From the 1st/2nd June if you go over the 40Gb you will be sent a letter again offering the Boost and also a charge of £5 for going over your limit.

The 3 strikes rule as far as I am aware is still in place however as far as i am aware we have never disconnected anyone for this reason "todate".

We are working on a download usage tool which we should be available soon via the talktalk members forum.

Thanks

TALKTALK_SUPPORT: Can you tell us what happens if you break the 80GB "Mega Download Boost" allowance?

The "Mega Download Boost" was sold to me over the phone as virtually unlimited and I got the impression that the 80GB was a guide rather than a hard cap. Can you clarify?

I've never heard of anyone breaking the 80gb limit !
80gb is around 27,306 song downloads (3mb each)
80gb = 327 films @ 250mb each.

It's plenty for now smile

are these quotas for download only?

I ask as I upload 140gb monthly with my current ISP.

P.S. films are a minimum of 700mb, though its becoming more and more common for these to be 4gb or even 8gb.

There are 10 kinds of people, those who understand binary and those who don't.

With that type of usage i think i would be safe in saying TalkTalk is definitely not the ISP for you .
The fact you have had to ask what happens if you go over the already very generous 80gig cap would say your usage is very high or has the possibility to be extremely high .
I would look else where as it well documented that you will be traffic managed to death and be in a 18 month contract ( not a good place to be ) .

Im confident you will be traffic managed , as this is how TalkTalk keep speeds high and and latency low for all its other users that use the Internet in a more normal fashion .
Extreme heavy usage will not be welcome on TalkTalk and i personally would not want to risk a 18 month contract if i already knew that P2P is throttled and high usage not the norm or the excepted .

im sorry, but if a film is 250mb then you are sadly mistaken! a half hour episode of my name is earl is more than that, and if your after high quality DVD from iTunes, you're looking at 10x what you said. Currently i have used 130GB this month.
