Tiscali e-mail SNAFU

[link to this post]

Customer was having issues with his tiscali email.

Contacted TalkTalk and they could not help, even suggested he contact M$, but fortunately gave him a dud number.

Surprise #1
Logged into webmail as {UserName}@tiscali.co.uk to confirm account details correct.
First page said "Welcome philip.dexter1@btopenworld.com"
Who the heck is Philp Dexter"? Not my customer ! Not even a tiscali email address !
Fixed this, then...

Surprise #2
Mail sent to {UserName}@tiscali.co.uk bounces with a message :-

The following message to <mshill926@ymail.com> was undeliverable.
The reason for the problem:
5.3.0 - Other mail system problem 554-"delivery error: dd This user doesn't have a ymail.com account (mshill926@ymail.com) [-5] - mta1483.mail.bf1.yahoo.com"

How the heck is mail to my customer's tiscali email address being routed to mshill926@ymail.com ????

Looking at the headers of the bounced message only shows servers in as *.opaltelecom.net, which is TalkTalk's business brand.

Regards
Mike Williams

Surprise #2: Was this sent by Webmail or SMTP?

Have you tested with POP3 & SMTP?

This is the bounce message that anybody else receives when trying to send mail to tiscali address.

My client can log in to web mail and send email, but replies bounce as above.

What the heck is going on with the tiscali email server, why would it be trying to relay the message to another address.

To be more accurate I sent the email to the tiscali account via the gmail android app on my phone using my gmail account.

You mean anybody sending to your addy? Or is it a generalisation about anybody sending to any addy?

Client? Are you talking about a business client of yours or a software client? I'm getting confused.

There is nowt wrong with my 2 Tiscali addys, either thro' Webmail or POP3/SMTP, except that 2 almost identical spams got thro' pretending that my accounts at eBay & Amazon needed verifying. I don't even use a Tiscali addy at those sites LOL!

I repeat! Have you tried sending using SMTP to see if that's OK?

Ah, then it is probably using SMTP if it's anything like my Samsung Android eMail app.

Client = person in this context.
Anyone sending email to the specific tiscali email address.

Does anyone know of any user settings which might be causing this relaying?

Just been digging (during my lunch time) and I found that the TT web mail interface lets you set up an auto forward.

My customer's was indeed set to forward all mail to mshill926@ymail.com.

Interestingly if I unchecked the Forward incoming mail and then tried to save it was just coming straight back. (TT must be validating the address, far too much like good practice for them !!!)

If I set it to forward to a valid email address, the changes were saved.
This then allowed be to uncheck the forward and it is now saved without any forward set.

Why the heck didn't TT support staff know about and advise my customer how to un set this.

I did find some strange emails from the mysterious "Philip Dexter" (refereed to earlier) as shown below in the recycle bin and sent items, this looks very much like a phishing scam

Hello
