TalkTalk latency and general speeds?

[link to this post]

I am currently with plusnet on fttc 80/20. Recently speeds seem slightly erratic which I think might be either something to do with their traffic prioritisation or potentially even some congestion in BT or plusnets network.

As such I am looking to potentially move to TalkTalk.

I have a TBB graph setup which shows my average latency is around 12ms which I believe is pretty good.

Is anyone on TalkTalk fttc here able to post their graph and let me know what the fibre service is like generally. I am tempted to move to the 40/2 talktalk service as I mainly want the download and would like to save some cash too.

Here's my BQM graph for TalkTalk Fibre Large -

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/8bb425c147b...

None of the yellow has anything to do with my connection traffic, looks like congestion - TalkTalk don't consider it an issue(at least one other user has reported the same - needed low latency for gaming).

My experience of TalkTalk so far, good value for money(free year's mobile contract thrown in with the shopping vouchers and cashback). No problems with my connection other than the grotty BQM graph, consistently get 70Mb/s speedtest. Residential support from the community forums takes about three days per OCE reply to a thread - I really hope I never have a problem.

I'm on the TT 80/20 service and no issues:

All of the TalkTalk graphs I have seen make latency look terrible, my plusnet one for example baselines much below that when the line is idle.

I've been playing the Battlefield: Hardline beta since it was released and the latency is mostly 11ms in-game, sometimes even 10ms and haven't seen any speed issues lately.

I've had service from all the big ISPs, wouldn't recommend TalkTalk. When I was on the phone to them about leaving they didn't make it easy. I'd recommend Sky, they have a solid network, and you get a couple meg extra.

I'd be happier with Plusnet if I was paying the offer price, the network isn't as good as Sky's, but it's not surprising considering their size, and the low offer prices.

Plusnet:

Currently on Plusnet 80/20 - full 80/20 sync for a few years.

Whats wrong with the ~20ms latency on my TT line? Its quite good considering i'm based in the far north of Scotland...neighbours on BT & Sky FTTC never get below 30ms. Its all about routing....not all of us live in Central London next to our ISPs datacentres where we are able to get 2ms ping times on fibre.

I live many hours from London so whilst I appreciate that distance has something to do with it, I have yet to see a nice low latency TalkTalk TBB graph which makes me cautious.

There are people with sub 9ms and no wide yellow areas when I browse the BQM graphs, suspect it may be down to the hardware they are using, i.e. swapped out the standard TalkTalk hardware.

Really? It must be contagious then, jumping between multiple different routers/VDSL modems and between people on different connections. By the way the official TalkTalk HG635 Super Router doesn't play well with the BQM, not just in router mode, but in bridge mode as well(numerous people have noted that).

This is what happens when you try to use a HG635 with the BQM -

Thats really interesting thanks, the TalkTalk routers make it look like their connections really arent very good when they probably are. I think that TalkTalks network might be better than Plusnet at the moment, that of course doesn't mean the same for their customer service!
