What's going on?

[link to this post]

I mentioned this on the Entanet bit of the forums as a general thing, hoping other people were having the same, but I guess not. Yesterday, I noticed my down speed was 256kbps, my up was unaffected. So! I left the router unplugged for a few hours and presto, back up to 3.7k kbps. However... a download speed of 14kbps would suggest something is still amiss here. Should I just get in touch with Entanet/UKFSN?

your IP profile will have dropped to a low value and may not have come back up by the look of things. Turn it off for 20 minutes and see if it wakes up, if not call your support.

Well I turned my router off for a good 3-4 hours and the line speed's come back up anyway, but my IP profile is 'adsl135', which seems odd? I've sent 'em an email anyway.

HI
quote Yesterday, I noticed my down speed was 256kbps

Anything unusual happened to cause the drop in connection speed

quote but my IP profile is 'adsl135'

That is as expected when your synch dropped to 256 Kbps the profile dropped to 135 Kbps . It should reset itself automatically to 3000kbps after a couple days ,as long as you don't keep switching off router and the synch rate is steady . .

quote a download speed of 14kbps

That is another matter even with the low profile you should NOT have had that low result..That is probably an ISP problem .

Yohoho, the reason for the huge drop in speed was because some numpty had taken the master socket faceplate off to connect a line to go upstairs, but then had casually draped the router's ADSL cable across the bare wires (really). I didn't realise this till I picked the phone up and it was so noisy paper cups would have been better. So! A quick fiddle around to get the wire off the bare cables and we were good to go. The line's been at 3.7k steady for the past two days...but still, I'm on the thinnest internet ever, 15kb/s download, loading two sites simutaneously is like it was in the days of dialup. I thought I'd give them a ringyding tomorrow just to see what's going on.
