What router? & shud I use SNR Tweaking?

[link to this post]

I am getting different readings from different routers when I plug them in my LLU line.

The dg834gt doesn't seem to be as stable at a lower snr (tweak with dgteam firmware to 50% to give me 4DB snr margin) - connected at around 2100

The thomson 585v6 is pretty stable, but the wireless isn't as good and the line can appear to hang on certain occasions. (tweak with DMT to 60% to give me 4DB snr margin) - connected at around 2100

The BT business hub (no tweaking applied) connected at the highest reading (about 2400) out of the three last night, but when playing an online game (and looking at tbb meter on my other monitor) it would appear there are spikes every 4 mins or so, that cause the game to not respond, then it will throw me back in it, by which point everyone has changed position.

Any ideas on what I can do, or other routers I could use, I'm getting frustrated with the lot of them now.

I keep chopping and changing, what do you think I should do, out of all of them I like the DG834GT as it gives me a good CLI with tweaking in bedded into it, I also have a decent wireless arial that gives me a good range, but this does appear not too stable.

Just wondering what you guys think, any other routers? I think the thomson seems to give me the best speed, when i connect during the day.

Ben Bird

Most people seem to favour the DG834GT but I've briefly tried a 585v7, DG834Gv4, DG834Gv5 and a DG834GT with DGTeam 0848. It could be that my GT has developed a fault (I intend to investigate when I get time) but it seems quite unstable to me.

Overall, the DG834Gv4 takes some beating on my line but they're getting harder to find now. I wouldn't touch the v5 with the proverbial bargepole - I don't think it provides for tweaking either.

I would be looking for the most stable, followed by the one with the best wireless coverage. To me, a few K speedwise is neither here nor there.

Well i may consider getting the 834g v4 I have got a v3, but obviously that has got the ar7 chipset instead of broadcom so is not tweakable, although, the GT i would of thought should in theory be basically the same as the v4, dont know though.

Same Broadcom chip in CPU >>> BCM6348 V0.7

Hardware (GT) info

Hardware (v4) info

The GT is a SUPER-G WIRELESS ROUTER >>> link

to me as I have also used all 3 routers.

speedtouch 585v6 on 6.1.4.3 firmware is extremely good at holding synch speeds, very stable and good firmware.
speedtouch 585v6 on 6.2.29.2 firmware is also very good at holding synch but not as good as 6.1.4.3, however this firmware has better bitswapping which reduces line errors. No snrm tweaking with this firmware tho.
Netgear GT, can tweak snrm but in my opinion the router is not as good at holding synch in a stable manner as the 585v6, eg. when I was recently using my GT I had to tweak the snrm up to 7.5-8db to have a stable line, whilst the 585v6 I can synch at 6db usually and be ok.
BT business hub, like you said this synchs high at stock settings, well no settings to adjust. But like yourself I found it unstable with excessive errors causing things like dropped packets. I reckon the business hub actually synchs at a lower snr margin but just reports a higher one. The gui and feature set of the business hub is hideous if I remember correctly, considering its aimed at business users the features are very poor.

No comment on the 585v6 wireless abilities since I never used wireless then.

Ultimately I would suggest stability comes first.

Thanks very much for your input, it is good getting info from others to see your opinions on various routers.
