Slow Connection Using New Router

[link to this post]

Hi guys, I have a problem that doesn't make much sense to me.

This is our setup. Modem/Router connected to SonicWall TZ170 and then into the network. We use BT for broadband.

A few weeks ago, we developed a fault on our line, BT came out and fixed it. However, I couldn't get our Cisco 877 router to connect. I decided that I would use the spare D-Link DSL-504T router that we had. I plugged this in, configured it and it it connected to BT.

With my machine plugged directly in to the router, I get a speeds from Speedtest of about 5MB download and 0.6MB upload.

The problem occurs when I plug the router into the SonicWall and run the speed test from inside the network. I then get 1.5MB download and 0.6MB upload.

Unfortunately, I have no password for the Cisco router so can't check the configuration. I tried doing the reset password to get it but couldn't.

The only thing that has changed is the router so I do not understand why the speed is limited. If anyone can help I would be much obliged.

when you test the speed at the router is the sonicwall connected to the router at the same time ?

can you note down the sync speeds from the router in each case to see if they are changing.

With my laptop and SonicWall connected directly into the router, I get;
Ping 64ms
Download 4.99
Upload 0.68
From behind SonicWall, I get;
Ping 77ms
Download 0.95
Upload 0.64

OK, what do I look for?

The SonicWall has not changed, just the router.

Yarwell, thanks for the help, this is now sorted.

The D-Link router had a lot of carrier sense errors. After having a chat with a very nice IT guy, he suggested that it may be a duplexing issue between the firewall and new router.

Sure enough, after changing the mode from auto-sense to 10Mbs Full Duplex, the connection is back up to speed.

Many thanks again

thanks for the update, an ethernet issue tends not to be the first place to look !

Both may have been auto-sensing I guess and getting into a mess
