what causes you to get a throughput speed on speedtest.net that is actually higher than the recorded sync speed?

Burst speed, rather than average speed I think.

I've a 6 Meg connection, and have seen 12+ Meg on that site. My router isn't capable of more than 8 Meg.

a **** application ....

I have achieved 50Mbps on a fixed 2Mbps line - and that was from a overseas server. Your line will not transfer faster than your sync speed but the way the application measures the incoming data by just taking snapshots is going to be problematic.

I've had it on Symantec, Kaspersky, and with either turned off.

I've seen this before, and I don't use any of the AV products mentioned. Never figured out *why* it does it, but it consistently does.
