8kb/s download on top Post Office Internet package..

[link to this post]

I have the "up to 20mb/s" package with the Post Office, however, at nights I am only getting 8kb/s download and during the day, between 30kb/s-50kb/s. This would seem normal if I lived in the middle of nowhere, but this connection is in London, Poplar in particular.

What could the issue be here? Is the ISP mucking us around? They say our line cannot handle higher speeds.

Post your router stats.

Remember you are on an "up to 20mb/s" package; you could rightly get far less depending on your line length from exchange.

Which stats do you mean? The router model etc... or the logs that in can capture regarding line quality etc...?

downstream attenuation, connection speed, snr margin etc

Poplar is the middle of nowhere in broadband terms.

If your service is on the poplar exchange there are known capacity issues on BT Wholesale based connection through that exchange, and the post office is a BT Wholesale connection.

I know there are issues, but I really didn't think 3kb/s download (I am getting that now) is acceptable (or normal):

& the connection speeds?

Your Down NM is very high.

Oh, you are not on a 20 Meg package, but a 8 Meg one:
DSL Mode: ADSL_G.dmt

How do you mean connection speed? Is the bad down noise margin something that the ISP might be liable to fix?

I mean what does the router say they are? Best to get router stats incl. connection speeds after a daytime reconnection.

High NM more likely to indicate faulty wiring.

Heh, i'm slightly confused as to what you mean? In terms of connection speeds, this is what the router is telling us:

1120 kbps / 448 kbps
