Higher Ping Then Usual

[link to this post]

Hi,

I think this is the most appropriate sub-section of the forum to post my problem, if not please tell me where I should post my problem.

My ping has for a long time been a problem whilst playing games, I used to get very high latency. I asked on a malware site and they did not find the reason as to why I was having high pings. Yesterday I found I had a program called PBM.exe (Pando Media Booster). It was used for installing a game and since I had never uninstalled it, it was constantly stealing my bandwith. I uninstalled it and my game ran smoothly but this morning my ping is very high and once again I am unable to play games. My network is secured, hopefully someone knows the problem so I can play games again.

Thanks.

Try a traceroute to your gaming sites. That may indicate where the delays are happening.

e.g.

john@mercury:~$ traceroute bbc.co.uk
traceroute to bbc.co.uk (212.58.241.131), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
1 router (192.168.0.1) 2.220 ms 2.235 ms 3.846 ms
2 * * *
3 * * *
4 10.1.2.158 (10.1.2.158) 23.875 ms 24.112 ms 24.728 ms
5 bbc-gw1-linx.prt0.thdoe.bbc.co.uk (195.66.226.103) 26.832 ms 27.738 ms 28.349 ms
6 212.58.238.149 (212.58.238.149) 28.809 ms 27.355 ms 28.207 ms
7 virtual-vip-231.thdo.bbc.co.uk (212.58.241.131) 28.925 ms 16.925 ms 18.305 ms
john@mercury:~$

Sometimes it is tracert rather than traceroute. Additionally try with the ICMP option (-I perhaps).

I'm sorry, I'm kind of a little inexperienced with command prompt, what exactly would I type into command prompt? "Ping [gaming site]"?

traceroute gaming-site-domain

e.g.

traceroute www.nintendo.com

I'm not a gamer so am not sure of the domain names.

tracert is the command to use if you're using Windows.

tracert multiplay.co.uk

Ok here's what the tracert gave me.

C:\Users\Administrator>tracert leagueoflegends.com

Tracing route to leagueoflegends.com [64.7.194.249] over a maximum of 30 hops:
1. 10 ms 11 ms 11 ms 10.31.128.1
2 19 ms * 13 ms 10.170.166.45
3 10 ms 11 ms 14 ms 216.113.123.109
4 * 32 ms * 216.113.122.74
5 * 28 ms 29 ms sl-crsl-chi-0-4-0-1.sprintlink.net [144.232.26.65]
6 41 ms 3292 ms 47 ms sl-crsl-kc-0-8--2-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.18.217]
7 * 51 ms * sl-crsl-fw-0-3-5-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.20.4]
8 1299 ms 85 ms * sl-crsl-ria-0-4-2-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.25.159]
9 * * 79 ms sl-crsl-ana-0-13-3-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.8.110]
10 * * * Request timed out.
11 80 ms 80 ms * sl-internap-90007-0.sprintlink.net {144.232.154.206]
12 * * * Request timed out.
13 * * * Request timed out.
14 * * * Request timed out.
15 * * * Request timed out.

Also pinging the site does not work, it's as if they've blocked it.

C:\Users\Administrator>ping leagueoflegends.com

Pinging leagueoflegends.com [64.7.194.249] with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 65.7.194.249:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)

Thanks.

Is Videotron your ISP?

What about other games?

Are you running Windows 7? If so, open task manager > performance > resource monitor > Network (this will tell you if a program is consuming bandwidth).

Yeah Videotron is my ISP,

I tried pinging vindictus.nexon.net but that didn't work.
So I tried pinging CallofDuty.com and it gave me:

C:\Users\Administrator> ping callofduty.com

Pinging callofduty.com [216.174.100.205] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 216.174.100.205: bytes=32 time=89ms TTL=55
Reply from 216.174.100.205: bytes=32 time=90ms TTL=55
Request time out.
Reply from 216.174.100.205: bytes=32 time=94ms TTL=55

Ping statistics for 216.174.100.205:
Packets: Sent = 4 Received = 3, Lost = 1
Approximate round trip times in milliseconds:
Minimum = 89ms, Maximum = 94ms, Average = 91ms

Also I'm in "Networking" but I'm not sure how to check if someone is using my network.

Thanks.

It looks like you might be suffering packet loss. Are you running a wireless connection?

Download http://winmtr.net/ and run it against callofduty.com for 15 minutes. Post the result.
