Entanet and their new traffic shenanigans

[link to this post]

I'm an Entanet reseller, and have sworn by their ADSL for years as they always clearly show usage limits etc and don't mess about. Their support is second to none and I previously, wouldn't hesitate recommending them to friends and family.

BUT

After their recent announcment I've seen speeds drop from a steady 800Kb/s (FTP, HTTP, Newsgroup, no matter *WHAT*) at teatime, to no more than 100Kb/s on newsgroups. HTTP traffic is still fine, as is FTP. Seeing as I'm sat here in peak time (So I'm paying for it) I'm quite disgusted. I'm not a heavy user, I do ~25GB a month tops on average, so when I do occasionally want to do a large download I expect to be able to use my connection to its full benefit. I'm <1KM from the exchange and sync at 8192kbps down and 448 up - No line issues whatsoever. I'm at wits end! Is this going to continue after the 3 week trial?

If so I'm off, and I'll be looking for a new supplier!

Good luck finding one as good as Entanet used to be! Mind you I think this will have all shaken out in a year (surely by then BT will have sorted their end of the problem).

And what does their "second to none" support have to say?

You don't say you recommended them in the past but no more. So you may leave but recommend them?

All their 'second to none' support, as you quote, say is to look at the recently posted information on http://noc.enta.net and that there is nothing more they can do. I'm looking at 300KB/s throughput at this moment in time. I'm going to give them a chance, and I'm not in a hurry to move away as I previously mentioned, I am a reseller myself!

Not too happy so far though. Anyone else finding HTTP traffic and other normal stuff full speed but things like torrents/newsgroups slow? (I haven't checked torrents yet, but newsgroups are ever so slow, even at this time of night I can't acheive anywhere near the 800KB/s I used to!)

You miss my point smile.

In your opening post you say this:-

"Their support is second to none and I wouldn' t hesitate recommending them to friends and family."

You do not contradict that statement later.

Based on what was said about the traffic management, newsgroups and torrents are exactly what I would have expected to be slow once the system kicked in...

In essence what will happen is that those who want more usage will eventually end up paying more, or moving to LLU.

Original post fixed..

Darn.. LLU's not going to be an option at my exchange. (We had to petition to get ADSL in the first place!)

I'm gonna hang fire on changing and see how this all pans out. I don't want more usage, I rarely come close to my 30GB limit. I just want to be able to get 8 meg out of my perfectly capable connection at midnight tongue

I previously got 800KB/s at teatime, so it's a bit of a pain. I'm also on a pretty inactive exchange so shouldn't be fighting for bandwidth locally smile Ah well! Just have to see how it goes.

30GB, zen is £24.50 for 25GB, and 50GB for £34.25

If you go much cheaper then you enter into the area where it becomes massed market popular, and the balance of users doesn't work. Some say fast.co.uk now, but by the time you add VAT not much different from Zen.

IDnet is £24.26 for 30GB download, and £34.25 gets you an extra 30GB between midnight and 9am.

I think Adam has the same issue as me, in that we live in the digital twilight world of market 1. No LLU and BT dragging their heels over WBC. So we are doubly disadvantaged by paying more than LLU service for less than LLU services, and before someone suggests the simplistic solution of moving - I cant.

We had a decent connection until recently, the claims of Enta that its all p2p/newsgroup abuse seems a tad convenient considering they are hammering our paid for time. My own view is that they have pared resources back to below a level suitable for the customer base and the measures introduced are a result of this, there have been periodic slowdowns this year, which I suspect were tied into Entas intent to reduce IPSC bandwidth when migrating - I think they did, and went beyond an equitable reduction. Now they are just another overselling member of the herd, no longer outstanding - even the resellers are looking to moving customers away.

It really is frustrating to keep getting told how wonderful LLU can be when we have zero chance of getting it, and the simple truth is that whatever percentage B/S claims, a large number of people in the UK can't get LLU or indeed any other faster service as BT seem intent on pushing "fast" services into exchanges that already have them via LLU. My exchange stats haven't changed in a couple of years despite the amount of building around here, but despite 8000+ lines I think being out on a coastal tip we are less attractive being "at the end of the road" with no "infill" enablements possible, our WBC status seems to be "eventually" as no date is set.

I moved to Enta for the quality of service. that has been deteriorating over the last 12 months and it seems Enta have joined the race to the bottom, both in terms of connection and support. It seems that for Market 1 dwellers we are forgotten and discounted both by the industry and the alleged regulator.

Just My Opinion... YMMV

Any ISP that thinks that selling my click traffic is acceptable is MisinPHORMed

25 gig is not a heavy user??????

I'm surprised if I can MANAGE 1 gig a month ... prob take me about 2 YEARS at least to download 24 gig! So, what's the problem????

But then, I can't use i-players or anything like that on my line.

I would think I am in the majority, not the minority of home users! SO, I am thinking that the BB tax is not going to help me, or the millions who cannot get, and will not get high speed BB with consistent throughputs over 1 meg, let alone 2 meg!

The TV adverts just irk me no end .. catch up on i-player, if you've missed this, .. blah blah ... if only ...

And we still pay £19.99 a month.

I have still to see what an i-player looks like and what it does ...
