Virgin Media SEVERELY throttling P2P speeds

[link to this post]

Is just me or do Virgin Media seriously limit download speeds when using torrents to transfer files?

Depends on your speed package

higher the package the less throttling.

Yes they do slow down P2P and Newgroups in addition to the throttling thresholds, apparently only during peak hours.. However I believe they allocate a certain percentage of bandwidth to these protocols, so outside of peak hours during heavy usage, they could still be impacted.

Yes your right but this is only for upload speeds, download speed is completely unrestricted if you read the page you quoted.

They have separated it deliberately, as it covers both the upload and download.

I doubt they would include Newsgroups if it was primarily for the upload, as the majority of Newsgroup users are downloading, as opposed to uploading maybe the odd file. Obviously P2P is a different beast and can sustain upload indefinitely.

I read that page, and can't agree with you.

Within the details, section 1 very much matches what you assert - restrictions apply to upload only, with the package thresholds listed in the separate tab.

However, section 2 describes slowdown of P2P and NNTP in busy hours. It makes no statement about whether it is applied to upstream or downstream.

The two sections are independent.

Looking at this I can see both sides but im still inclined to believe no restrictions on downloads as per the first paragraph of the page, section 2 of the 'Traffic Managment'...

"We've got great news for all customers on our broadband tiers of 30Mb and above. After listening to your feedback, we've decided to stop applying our traffic management policy to download speeds. So now you can download as much as you like without worrying about traffic management slowing you down."

Having used virginmedia, I can clarify that torrents, p2p etc was never throttled on my connection (200Mbps)

I found torrents were slow on my 152Mb Virgin connection than my Infinity 2, but I think it's probably linked to the single thread slow speed you see on speedtests also.
