Losing connection every hour on the hour

[link to this post]

Not sure if this is something wrong with my computer, modem or if its a Virgin Media issue. I keep losing my connection every hour, almost exactly on the hour. The only way to get my connection back is to turn my Modem on and off, then the connection will work until the nexk O'Clock hits.

I've changed the wires, reset everything and my modem is now connected directly to my computer (no router involved). Anyone know what could be causing this to happen? I have phoned the Virgin Media Tech support, but due to an outstanding line fault I can't actually hear them very well, after 20 minutes of shouting down the phone so I could hear them , they hung up tongue

Any help appreciated.

When this started were you using a router, and now you are connected directly is it still happening?

Was there anything in the router/modem logs?

Does the modem lose sync or is it just the connection dying?

Assuming you are using Windows, have you looked at the event logs to see if there is anything happening on the hour?

Mines not every our but every 15 minutes or so my connection crawls to a halt. I know because my downloaded go to about 128kbps and my streaming music stops.

I just turned it off for about 12 hours and used my backup. Not sure if it's fixed or not only been on-line about 10 mins.

I found this forum because I have have the same problem and was searching the internet for possible answers.

I have a Belkin wireless router and I am with NTL/Virgin. Also using WinXP. I haven't had any problems at all until they done the 10mb upgrade from 2mb!

I found I was losing connection to the internet but could download emails and accesss the routers setup home page. Tech support was usless!

The only solution I use at the moment, is to go to the setup home page of the router and reset the router. Once I have done this, it works fine for a while. I even have a laptop connected using a homeplug/ethernet device and this also loses connection, so I know it's not my wireless setup.

Whichever way the broadband is fed through, I feel the 10mb has caused the problem. I have read somewhere else that Virgin sent out a wireless router to some other people with the same problem, so I will be phoning them to ask them to send me one!! Wish me luck!

If it is this causing the problem, I would rather go back on to the 2mb broadband than BUY a new router, but I doubt that's possible?

Also a post in another forum states that the modem supplied by what was NTL, has issues with Belkin routers?

Has anyone found any answers to this problem yet.

I've lost my connection again all they can say is send out an engineer it's [censored] frustrating that I have to be around 2-3 times a week now for them to come and play with it.

Power light ON
Ethernet On
Upstream flashing
Downstream solid.
Internet off

Router says it's unable to acquire and lock on.

I'd rather just not bother

Don't suppose you're using a Belkin 7230 router?

If so, you might need to update your firmware.

Good luck!

No, it's not the Belkin 7230, but thanks for the info and the link to Virgin.

Mine is a Belkin F5D7230-4 and there are no updates for it.
Interesting though Virgin saying that they don't support Belkin routers but the date on that page is 2007.

I checked the Event list in WinXP as suggested by pete_thomson, and I did find two events that are connected to my internet connection. I intend to check this now, as soon as I have another problem loosing the connection.

The two events where:

Microsoft advised for the Event Source: Tcpip to run Netstat -no, which gave me the results below. Although they explain how to check the results with Task Manager, I couldn't really understand it.
