Recommend cable modem for 100/10 product

[link to this post]

My dad was just upgraded to 100/10. I want to replace the router thing with a simple modem like the one he had before (Virgin took it away). Has anyone done this? Thanks

Search for "bridge mode virgin superhub"

You can put the superhub into a mode that lets you use a traditional ethernet (cable/dsl) router, i.e. makes the superhub behave as a fairly dumb modem.

Not yet you can't.

You can make a router work with it of course so long as it having 2 layers of NAT don't mess anything up - lots of people are running that way because the Superhub can be problematic (translation - keeps hanging and/or rebooting).

Hmm ok - they took away the old modem saying it couldn't handle the 100 product. I assume that was correct?

The VMNG300 (the one they had on 50Mbps) can work on 100 right now but may not in future if VM increase the number of channels in use - it can only bond 4 channels and the Superhub can bond 8. I think most areas are still only using 4 channels tor 100Mbps but as 4 channels is only 200Mbps total they will presumably be using more eventually. I've seen mention that 5 are in use in some places.

None of the old 10 or 20Mbps modems support 100Mbps.

Thanks I might try and ask for it back then in that case. I don't want this router thing.

No choice until the bridge mode software is released. When it is, you will be able to set the SuperHub into this new mode and it will then work in the same way as the old cable modem you had - but supporting the higher speeds.

Ah maybe that's what my dad has been talking about - software rather than hardware. He reckons the engineer told him they are beta testing a new modem (not router) at the moment which will eventually replace the Super Hub.
