Speed Tests

[link to this post]

Just done a broadband speed test and got a massive 3.6 mbps download!!! Really! I am on 100mb. So I went to another and got 78MB. Engineer came this morning because of speed problems and he got me up to 95mb but that seems to be a historical content now. It was suggested in the Virgin forum that I do a monitor test from this site. But cannot find it - so? Where is it?

I want speed, and I want it NOW

Probably http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping

Which monitors the latency of your connection, which can be used to infer if there is lots of congestion in your area

As well as the TBB monitor you might like to take a look at http://www.snapfiles.com/get/jdspeedtester.html

You'd need to leave a PC running it to be of much use but it will show how performance varies with time.

It looks as though http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html can't correctly measure speeds above 30mbit/s. It's been like this ever since I had a 50 / 100mbit connection.
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/1...

http://www.speedtest.net/result/2191426456.png shows over 90mbit/s and this is backed up by DU Meter that I run on my PC (I get 12Mbyte/s peak whereas from http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html I only get 4.1Mbyte/s peak).

I guess that a lot of people using this site expect virgin media broadband to be shown as faster but when the speed tester is giving incorrect results there would be a lot of people who are misinformed.

Virgin Media 100Mbit/s
http://www.speedtest.net/result/2191426456.png
Downstream 94.86Mb/s
Upstream 4.87Mb/s

The tester isn't giving incorrect results it is showing accurately the speed you achieve from the TBB test server.

This has been discussed here and elsewhere countless times - once I too thought that the problem lay with the TBB tester - it doesn't it's the fact that VM run some of their peering links at very high utilisation including, it seems, the one used in your routing to the TBB tester. I've seen TBB speedtests taken from university connections showing over 400Mbps.

The issue has been explained by another poster, and if a provider decides to run one of their peering links hot that is their choice.

Our maps show plenty of people with faster connections getting decent speeds and we have verified our tests capabilities time and time again.
