Vodafone - Perfomance

[link to this post]

Hi All,

I am currently with NowTV(Sky) - never had any problems but my offers are about to run out and if they do not offer any new reductions i may as well leave.

Vodafone have caught my eye, but i have been bitten before but under performing BB companies and want to make sure i make the right decision.

Are there speeds sold?
Are Pings Low?
What are there up times like?

I think they also now own Demon internet and they were one of the companies that gave me grief all be it a long time ago.

Thanks

I would avoid using the Vodafone FTTC/VDSL router because of the poor Wifi performance. Vodafone now allow you to use the BT approved routers.

What I have works OK and is stable. I am not a heavy user.

Generally a mixed bag, some congestion etc.
It would not be my first choice.
Often Sky has similar prices to NOWTV.

I've only been with Vodafone for a couple days, but so far it's a big improvement on my old ISP CloudScape with faster download speeds and better ping rates for less money. It's been rock solid and no problems with their router.

One correction on a previous comment is that you can now obtain details to use another router and I wasn't even asked what kind it is, but since the Vodafone router is working so well I see no reason to change it.

This is my personal experience

Customer Service - Absolutely dire

Service - Was great at first now totally unusable between 7-10pm through congestion. Speeds as low as 5Mbps when router synced at full.

Pings between 7-10pm as high as 175 when they are around 13 in the daytime.

My experience....

Customer service is pretty bad, I have come across a couple of good eggs but they are the exception rather than the norm.

The supplied router is poor, I was suffering from the FEC/CRC errors on uploads which seem fairly common. Connection used to drop at least once in 24 hours (usually in the early hours of the morning). Changed to a Billion router (as they finally started giving out the required usernames and passwords) and these issues have disappeared.

As for speeds, I am on the 40/10 package and sync at 40000/7138. I suffer from significant drops in single threaded download speeds on a daily basis during peak times. I expect this is due to insufficient backhaul capacity. It's been getting worse over the last few months.

This starts between 6-7pm and goes on until between 10 and midnight. Here are some speedtests (all taken via a LAN connection) from this week to illustrate the issue:

https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/15196758782...

Tuesday
https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/15197571298...
https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/15197660847...

Wednesday
https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/15198367218...
https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/15198442718...

Thursday
https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/15199236435...
https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/15199363757...

Friday (tonight) started dropping from around 3pm
https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/15199363757...
https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/15200211688...

As you can see, my multi-threaded download speed is hardly affected if at all. It's just the single threaded performance which drops dramatically. Most frustratingly for me is the affect this has on the performance of my works VPN in the evening.

This performance is significantly worse than I received from TalkTalk retail a couple of years ago. TalkTalk would have moments of significant slowness but it seemed to be only for short (non-regular) periods and seemed to affect both multi-threaded and single threaded downloads.

My advice would be to avoid Vodafone broadband at the moment until we see if they increase capacity or keep running the service with such significant under capacity. With all their investment in advertising, PR and really low prices I expect things to get worse before they get better.

My contract is up at the end of May and I fully intend to leave Vodafone and go elsewhere!

My exchange link is flagged as Red, but it needs to move to Black (totally knackered) before vf will consider doing anything about it. Apparently even then the process is expected to take a minimum of 6 months

daytime performance is fine, but as stated else where in the evenings the service is rubbish. SD streaming on All4 often causes the image to freeze

I'm on the upto 76 service, syncing at 80down, 15up

Vodafone Fibre (40/10), Draytek 130, DrayTek 2925, DrayTek AP-910c x 2
(Gone but not forgotten: AP-700, 2820n x 2, 2800vg, 2800, HG612)
