Microsoft buying Skype won't play a relevence to it's general day to day operation.

Heh... I would say that I'm an MS hater, but I'm certinaly not a fan, prefering open solutions (open source and standards) wherever possible... Why is why I don't use proprietary Skype, prefering the open SIP standard!

So for me, this is an amusing sideline...

The "trouble" will come when it's a standard part on every desktop, home and office. Then it will be interesting to see what happens..

I'm fairly impartial about Microsoft. The good thing about their products is that generally they work to the extent that you don't really have to pay much attention to them.

MS probably hope Skype will now become mainstream notwithstanding that you have to have a phone connection in the first place to use it. If 100 million users are using Skype at the same time just how well will it hold up?

I only use Skype for the odd text message when my PC is turned on. You can use a landline or a mobile without a computer to talk to people too! If Skype worked directly via a router (like voipcheap etc) I do think it would be more of a runner.

With voipcheap you do not even have to use the internet once a call is established. Just ask it to link two phones anywhere in the world and it does it at very sensible prices particularly when it is too expensive to use a roaming mobile for any length of time.

Perhaps we will soon have an optional Windows Communicator edition!

You first log into the Voipcheap web page then enter the two phone numbers in a box (say, my mobile outside UK and son at home) hit connect and you speak as if you were making a mobile call only much cheaper.
Can also be used from a workplace to avoid your calls being logged!
Quite clever really!
