VOIP calls too loud

[link to this post]

I've recently switched to a VOIP provider. The only issue I have is that the call volume is too loud. Even on my phones lowest setting it's too loud and is much louder than my BT line.

I've tried a different phone and it's the same on that, a wired phone, a dect phone and dect headset. It's just too loud at the lowest setting.

Is this likely to be some compatibility issue with the phone <> router and I should buy a newer phone? The router firmware is locked down so I can't change anything on that.

Any help appreciated as I'm going deaf during conference calls!

Are you using an ATA for the VoIP and plugging various analogue phones into that ? It may have a default config for a different country (US) for example as a vaguely remember that US analog phones are a bit quiet used on UK lines which implies they are less sensitive or a higher power is used perhaps ?

Changing the volume settings or line characteristics in the ATA may help.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I'm plugging my dect phone directly into my ISPs router, so I have very little control over it. The config is locked down so I can't see much at all on it.

My ISP are looking into it, with their voice provider, but I was just wondering if there was likely to be something on the router causing this, or if I should try and find a phone with a better volume control, which I don't really want to do, especially as it works fine on my BT line.

IMHO the settings of the VoIP part of the router may be the issue. What is it ?

http://www.aoakley.com/articles/2008-01-08.php mentions the Impedance settings appropriate to UK phones

http://www.provu.co.uk/pdf/sipura/sipura_uk_regional... also mentions impedance.

A mismatched impedance may be part of the story.

I'll see if my ISP will give me access to the router. It's a Inteno DG201.
