Good quality UK VoIP with good customer service?

[link to this post]

I am fortunate to have an FTTPoD (330Mb/s) line and would like to cancel my BT copper line rental and switch to a VOIP service using my siemens gigaset phones and the N300 IP gigaset base. Given this will be my primary landline, it needs to be good quality and reliable (I do not want my wife calling me to complain about the phone service!!!) and I would like reasonable customer service in case something does go wrong.

The posts I have read so far are either complaining about a VoIP provider or are from people who use the service quite differently to me.

Any thoughts on what service provider might be appropriate for me? Thanks!!

You will get what you pay for!

Cheap service will mean low bandwidth and possible latency issues.

Higher cost will mean higher bandwidth with significantly better quality and a better service.

I personally use BT's Business service for two lines and have no issues whatsoever. Call clarrity is excellent, no latency is noticeable, charges are reasonable - I am on an old plan and have a number of minutes available however, as yet I have never gone over the limit.

The numbers are 056** range with a local PSTN number mapped to it at no cost.

I cannot fault the service.

The only issue might be compatibility with the N300IP - I tried one and could not get it to work. Gigaset then went to resolve the issues and I believe it is now solved. So, if you do go that route, then let me know if it works.

I've gone for the other end of the scale and i have gone for the cheapest provider that i could find.
However, if they were unreliable i would have left, but after using only voip indoors for 18 months, i have never had a problem with localphone.

The owner used to own ebuyer, but decided to venture into voip. (i think thats correct)
Calls are from 0.4ppm to call uk landlines and 1.5ppm to call a mobile.

The service has been perfect for me.
Also, make sure that you buy a phone that can stop the sip scanners.
My sister had problems last week and luckily, the phones settings was able to stop the phantom calls that can happen.

Good Luck. I doubt there will be any going back to pots.

edit - additionally, be very careful, voip fraud could end up being a nightmare. I choose to use payg for all my accounts, just in case.

Voipfone are very helpful. I have an account and plan to make more use of it.

Another option might be http://www.aaisp.net.uk. They do not have a 1571 service but will email voicemail

Sipgate won't let you port a number to their 'cheap' service.

With something like the N300IP you can use someone like discountvoip for out going calls.

I ventured into VoIP myself,

cannot fault VoIPFone and have used SipGate UK

For the overall cost it's worth having more than one provider

Voipfone just got my Cisco SPA112 to connect through a new router by deleting the SIP ToS/DiffServ parameter. I shall now port my BT landline number to them.

Somebody asked me that before, when I made another point about porting my number. Maybe he will come along and answer your question. smile

A clue is that it does appear that there are very few broadband suppliers that don't come with a phone service or insist you have one.
