Can you port a number from a live FTTC line?

Can you port a landline number from a live broadband connection to a VOIP service without breaking things?

You can, but only if the number was originally issued by BT and the VOIP provider really understands the system!

Ask your VOIP provider if they can "renumber with number export".

AAISP can do it, but it seems to involve them taking over the line as well.

I've just done this, but I'll be cancelling BT and Infinity when it goes through as I've moved to VM.

I started the port to SipGate and have just got a "sorry you're leaving us" letter from BT, not sure how it will affect the broadband, e.g., would it go to wires only service.

When I ported a number from BT they just sent me a letter and terminated the line. There was no 'would you like to stay with another number option'. Prior to this I did terminate my Plusnet ADSL service as I wanted the port to work.

No, your line will cease so your broadband will cease as well.

In your case, this is the desired outcome, not so for the OP1

Hence my post to say that it can be done, but the order needs to be submitted with a renumber request.

Yes, I think step 1 would be to make sure that the VOIP provider is familiar with making such a request and that the broadband supplier wont be upset by the change.
