Question about BE

[link to this post]

Hey guys,

I'm currently with virgin 100Mb and its terrible for gaming as my area is highly over utilised.
I'm looking to join BE and I'av heard good things so far.

Has anyone who is with BE got a line length of roughly 2.5km? If so what Speed and ping times do you get? I was on sky before Virgin and had a downstream attenuation of 54db and a speed of 2.5mb which now I think was too low for my line.

Thanks in advance smile

2.5 Mbps connection speed or speedtest result? Two very different things.

4 Meg is an ok connection speed for 54dB line, and would give around 3 Meg from a speedtest if everything is running perfectly

2.5Mbps speedtest result. Attenuation for a 2.5km line should at lowest be around 30db, what factors could affect attenuation?

Line length principally! What makes you think your line length is 2.5 KM? Your attn. says it is 3.9 KM. Perhaps you mean distance from exchange?

Yes, BT's recorded line length and confirmed by BE that it is exactly 2570m to the exchange.

Both are from the same source and that can be wrong, attenuation is a much better guide to reality

Measured the likely road route?

I don't believe that BE reported BT Recorded Line Length. It's about 30% below my true one. It's about the length of the road route to exchange for me. Attenuation is a far better predictor and is anyway what your speeds will be a function of.

By road its about 1.5miles which = 2.57km .
The longest route would be 1.9 miles - 3km and that's an estimate of 41db attenuation.

So really its just pot luck lol. The only other option could be an old degraded phone line? I have no idea what mines like. Either its going to be better than than virgin. I can live with a slower speed so long as I get a stable ping for gaming.

Maybe, I have no idea tongue

It's a shame FTTC isn't around my area or no plans have been made frown

EDIT: Virgin don't count as FTTC in this case, they suck. (good speeds, jittery ping's and [censored] CS)
