ADSL2+ - Sky, TalkTalk, BT Wholesale - Upstream - SureSIgnal

[link to this post]

Hi,

I'm currently with ADSL24 on the TalkTalk Business Wholesale network (line rental + calls + ADSL2+). My exchange offers nothing faster than ADSL2+. The only LLU providers are TalkTalk and Sky. - I'm on the Harbury exchange.

I currently get about 12Mbps down, 650Kbps up.

My main use case for broadband is video conferencing, webex and Vodafone SureSignal (as I have no mobile service at home). I therefore need good upload speeds. The current network seems to have latency spikes, which really upset the SureSignal and throw it offline. I'm looking to switch to an ISP offering

- High upload bandwidth
- Low latency, high quality, low packet drops

I'm mostly concerned with business hours (9-6).

I download about 15 - 30GB per month.

Any suggestions on where to look?

Thanks, Cuthbei

Adsl2+ annex m via talktalk wholesale is an option but your upload speeds look slow for adsl2+ and suresignal should not drop from standard variations in latency unless we are talking an old unreliable sagem unit

What are the line stats from the current router?

Thanks for your reply.

The SureSignal unit was the old one 1st generation, but was replaced with a 3rd generation more recently. Both don't work well.

ADSL stats from DG834G

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 16079 kbps 916 kbps
Line Attenuation 14 db 3 db
Noise Margin 12 db 12 db

I'm close to the exchange (less than 1km), but that noise margin looks high I think doesn't it.

Thanks, Cuthbei

The high noise margin is costing you download speed, and probably upload too.

20200Kbps to 20600Kbps is what I'd expect from a ~1km line
http://www.coolwebhome.co.uk/calc/index.php?param=RG...

ADSL2+ Annex M should really offer you a decent upstream speed, maybe in the 1.5 to 2 Meg range, at the cost of a meg or so download speed.

TalkTalk LLU
or
BT Wholesale and the right ISP are the two options for Annex M.

But I would not expect the sure signal to need even slower to 300 to 400 Kbps anyway.

There may be scope for TalkTalk to tweak your line as it is now, have you set up a Broadband Quality Monitor to track the latency on the connection, http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping this might help to pin down if there are latency issues.

Thanks for the reply. I checked and the line distance is in fact less than 500m.

I will check with m current ISP to see if they can tweak the line. Also, I will grab the stats from my ripe Atlas probe to look for variations in latency.

Thanks

I have made a few changes (router, RJ11, micro filter) and seen a small improvement. The biggest change for the Sure Signal was changing the router MTU to 1500 bytes, rather than 1492. I should have remembered this before!

The SureSignal is not smart enough to do path MTU discovery and has odd errors at smaller MTUs.
