Re: Will changing to a business ISP make any difference?

Ralph

Is the uploading/downloading on the same PC as the Skype call. If so the PC may be affecting the quality. Just recalculating a spreadsheet can lead to breakup.

You can improve the voice performance by changing the priority in task manager,
Application, right click, go to process, right click and set priority to high or real time if it will let you.

This should prevent the other things on the PC from contending with the voice. This may need doing on each call, but there is an open source app that will fix it permanently ( I think it is prio_win32_200-2667).

Same will need doing at the other end. Recommend not using wireless connections as well, this would remove another contention issue as well.

Thanks for that suggestion. I looked at the tool and it's showing congestion, but says that it was scheduled to be fixed on 18th Jan. Perhaps it's not actually been carried out??

OK

Thanks for all the comments.

My existing provider is telling me there 'may' be a problem. After having looked at the plusnet tools page my guess it's that this 'problem' is that we've just got a lot of people now hanging off an unbundled exchange that isn't about it get upgraded by BT anytime soon.

Here's my thinking.

I have two phone lines coming into the house. One already has broadband on it but it's just a white label product with Tiscali/Talk Talk doing the work.

I could opt for a business product from BT on the 2nd line. They're offering an unlimited service @ £15 ex VAT per month for a 24 month contract and I'm assuming that this service will have a circuit with fewer people on it? During office hours we could connect to BT over WiFi from the second phone line.

Meantime I could move my existing netgear router to plug it directly into the master wall socket and, because the house has pretty thick stone walls, use an ethernet over powerline solution to ensure there's as few variables at work as possible once the briadband is actually in the building.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Ralph

Re: ..changing to a business ISP make any difference? Xilo?

[re: CutieCakes] [link to this post]

I've now had a look at a few of the options for business broadband. Xilo looks promising as it's 'sort of' approaching what looks affordable from a SoHo perspective.

As we have two separate phone lines I'm thinking, keep the existing broadband package as a back-up and try out Xilo and see whether it makes any difference to performance.

Is anyone currently using Xilo via a non LLU exchange on ADSL Max?

Thanks

Ralph
