problems I have in IE8 in windows 7

[link to this post]
following my comment in this thread

http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/windows/f/3793394-t...

I thought I would list the problems I have, and possible solutions which I have not tried yet.

1 - After what seems like a random amount of uptime/usage the right click menu on web pages gets a delay, over time the delay increases in magnitude. It can if I do not reboot get to quite a big delay so I right click and the menu appears 2 or 3 seconds later.
(a) the delay is not on the address bar
(b) it is not on any right click system menus
(c) it is not in any other apps
(d) it occurs in no addons mode
(e) it occurs in 64bit IE8
If I close down all IE windows so no IE processes are running and then start again opening a new one the delay is still there, the only thing that removes the delay is a reboot. This suggests a system process or resource is the cause rather than something within IE itself.

I will try as soon as possible the solution someone already suggest to reset IE to default options (in advanced options), since I think its a system issue I dont expect this to fix it.
I am also running nod32 and admuncher both of which cause me suspicion as they integrate with IE although restarting admuncher or been closing it down makes no difference. Nod32 I used to run in windows XP but was version 2.x however I run the same version on my laptop which isnt showing the same symptons.

IE is not under very heavy use compared to how I stressed it in the past, currently right clicking has about a 1 second delay, the system has been up for 3 days 14 hours and I have 2 IE windows open with 26 tabs loaded between them (low for me).

Now 2nd problem

My IE cannot use basic http authentication, an example site is nod32 member download page, it needs auth to access and I cannot auth in my IE browser, I do not get an error the auth simply fails. Other example is phpmyadmin http auth fails.

Both problems occur in no addon mode so no addon is to blame.

Do you have many sites listed in the various security zones? Is SpywareBlaster installed? If AdMuncher adds sites to the various security zones, that may well be your problem.

I will try clearing it out.

Incidently some more updates.

1 - I have now used the option in IE to reset to default configuration, this doesnt fix the problem.
2 - I installed process monitor which monitors file/registry activity and see this repeating very fast.

So its repeatedly accessing the registry key HKCR\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{3050F391-98B5-11CF-BB82-00AA00BDCE0B}\ProgID and writing a blank tag to it about 3-4 times a second.

Manually navigating to the key shows its linked to C:\Windows\SysWOW64\mshtml.dll mshtml.HTMLWindowProxyClass

ok regarding the menu lag problem.

I ran spywareblaster and removed all the restricted zone stuff (left restricted activex in place) and there was an immediate improvement on menu lag, there was still some lag but noticebly less. So at this point I am guessing there is a memory leak or something in the zone implementation. I have also shutdown admuncher and have it not run on bootup.

After bootup I loaded up IE8 with some sites and now looking at process monitor the looping on that registry key is not occuring, so for now will see how it goes and see if the menu lag surfaces again with these changes done.

The http auth however is still broken. Nod32 member download is rejecting me but works in FF and opera.

I don't think you're going to solve that last one. It's fairly well known that IE doesn't support Digest Authentication other than to an IIS server using domain logons. BE customers are very aware of this as the BEBox, by default, uses Digest Authentication. This is not a new problem with IE 8 - as the link shows, the problem existed in IE 7.

well what I find odd is that someone on the nod32 forums says it works for them, and a web developer also told me he has no problem using the auth in phpmyadmin.

I guess I should try nod32 auth laptop now on my laptop to see.

yeah seems you could be right (fails also on laptop), I wonder if these other people are using IE6, but I am still not convinced as I was defenitly able to use basic http auth in IE7/8 on windows XP.

Try running ZonedOut and/or the DelDomains script from Mike Burgess to fully remove all "zone entries".
Once removed, the vast majority of users find that the entries can be replaced via SpywareBlaster etc without further problems.

ok phpmyadmin works now after I deleted all cached password entries.

nod32 still fails and I 'think' it is also using http basic auth but at least I am getting somewhere now, http basic auth is different to httpd digest auth.

I will email nod32 support to see what they suggest.

they are fully removed, if I manually check the restricted zone in IE options now it is blank.

The laggy menu and weird registry activity for the moment appear fixed.
