microsoft.com down?

[link to this post]

Anyone else seeing microsoft.com unobtainable?

I've been getting a raft of virus warning from AVG since last night (I suspect false positives and I was attempting to try Avast or Microsoft security essentials but can't reach either of these sites.)

Thanks. After a reboot neither firefox or internet explorer are working on that machine, probably destroyed by AVG's enthusiasm to remove any files it didn't like. Looks like I have a complete reinstall coming on frown

Bryn,

Before you do a complete reinstall you could try: Run > SFC.EXE /SCANNOW with the Windows OS installation disc in the drive - sometimes works by replacing corrupt or missing OS files.

Unfortunately I can't even get to the Start button now so I can't get to RUN.

Needless to say, my Acronis backup is not exactly current either!

If you have the OS disc then I would boot off of it and do a repair install.
All your data should be left intact though you may have to redo your windows updates.

Thanks for the advice.

I have managed to get back online by reinstalling firefox and have now installed Avast for a second opinion, which also thinks it is finding multiple nasties hidden away in places like OpenOffice. Very strange, many years of surfing with never a virus, now multiple occurrences popping up.

Can you kindly remind me of the process for doing a repair windows install? (WinXP).

Many thanks again.
