Error accessing hard driver from another PC

[link to this post]

Hi,

I hope someone can help. I have an urgent need to retrieve some essays off my son's hard drive within the next two days.

Background is my son's power supply has to go back to manufacturers for warranty claim as it failed recently taking the house electrics with it. We have three days to retrieve some essays off his MyDocuments folder to send off for uni application.

I have taken his hard drive and added it to my PC as a slave.
(If I try to boot from it, it crashes - probably because its screen and motherboard drivers are different from my screen and motherboard? )

After booting from my HD, I can see his c: drive perfectly well in explorer (although it is now d: drive on my PC of course).
Unfortunately one of the things I could see clearly is a little padlock symbol next to the 'Documents and Settings' folder.
It would not let me access it. I tried sharing it, or adding read or full control rights, but it would not allow a change.

Unfortunately I then tried to 'Take Ownership' of this folder, as the previous owner was SYSTEM ( This was stumbling through help screens - not knowing what I was doing frown ) and I tried taking ownership as Administrator / baston.

Unfortunately the padlock symbol has now been replaced by a shortcut symbol, and it now gives me a shortcut to the same folder on my c: drive.

So I'm currently borked.
Anyone any idea how I can undo what I've done, and get to see it ?

thanks

It is a shortcut, the folder you are after is in d:\users\[name]\documents

Sorry if I was not clear.

The HD I am trying to read is now the d: drive on my PC.
(It started its life as the c: drive on the dead PC.)

So I want to view d:\'Documents and Settings' folder.
Unfortunately that now appears to be replaced with a shortcut to the C: drive.
If I open the shortcut, I see my own username on c:, instead of my son's username from the original PC.

Actually, your post has solved my initial problem, in that I have now accessed his essays through d:\users\name\mydocuments
So thanks for that.

I am now left with the problem of apparently overwriting the actual Documents and Settings folder on d: with a shortcut instead to c:

Indeed it is thanks, and I had just edited my previous response to reflect that.

Do you think there is any way back from 'apparently' overwriting the d:\'Documents and Settings' actual folder with a shortcut.

Also, I am curious why I did not see the d:\Users folder before, and wonder if this only appeared after I 'took ownership' of the 'Documents and Settings' folder.
- although I cannot swear to this

It really is a shortcut, it's just there to maintain compatibility with older apps.

The folder you want would be in D:\Users\<name>\My Documents

You may need permission to access it, but that should be okay as you know what it is.

Just as an alternative suggestion did you think of seeing if the PSU in your working machine was compatible with the broken machine? It may have been quicker and easier to temp plug the PSU in to the machine and access the docs (copy to USB key or whatever) than try and struggle with permissions and all slaving the disk.
