Have got umpteen search providers set up, few pre-installed and some transferred from Vista, but I've got nowehere to type my search into. Looked everywhere for a setting altho' don't remember having to set anything in IE8.

Either click on the magnifying glass (to the right of the URL entry box) or (quicker, as you're going to be using the keyboard to type in the search term anyway) type <ctrl>-E to get a search box. If you use the latter option it's quicker than selecting a search box with the mouse and then typing into it. If you use the former it's the same number of actions.
This way you get all of the advantages of a normal search box (you can search for a URL and you get prompted).

Prompted as in suggestions. Also, if you were indeed searching for www.google.com for example, then you would get a different result obviously, as typing that in address bar will take you to www.google.com whereas in the search bar it will run a search for "www.google.com"... Kind of obvious, but the point is there are differences anyhow
