How to get tradional Windows 7(ished) desktop for W 8.1??

[link to this post]

Just a simple question for those who knew about this! I am thinking of getting a Windows 8.1 laptop this weekend but would like to "configure" its desktop layout to that very similar to Windows 7, which I'm most familiar with like Start Menu etc. Could any knowledgeable one guide me through this please???

Thanks

Classic Shell seems to work reasonably well with Windows 8. I've installed it on a friend's laptop and she's been quite happy with it. Personally, I'm sticking with Win 7.

'Sir, please,' she said... 'Will you not share your wisdom with us?'
'I have no wisdom,' he told her.
'Your experiences, then?'
'They have been trivial, uninteresting, and full of error.'

This is embarrassing. I've never had so many people agree with me. crazy

Thank you for suggesting that by installing the FREE Classic Shell, which seems to have quite a lot of options, would make Windows 8 more user friendly and getting back the familiar traditional look and feels of previous windows. However is there any hidden menus or settings that I may just configure in Windows 8.1 desktop, but without installing the Classic Shell, to provide some "familiar looks" like Windows 7??
Thanks

Not really no.... Barring the start menu Windows 8 is incredibly similar to Windows 7 in terms of control panel etc.. I am not sure what other familiar looks you may be referring to.

I've had little hands-on experience of Windows 8, I'm afraid, so I can't answer your question. From what I've read, Microsoft may include some sort of start menu in the next update of Windows 8.1 (due August) but we will probably have to wait for Windows 9 for something that looks and feels like a traditional desktop environment. A good place to post your question would be on Windows 8 Forums. These also cover Windows 8.1.
