*Windows Offer Details

Yes, free! This upgrade offer is for a full version of Windows 10, not a trial. 3GB download required; standard data rates apply. To take advantage of this free offer, you must upgrade to Windows 10 within one year of availability. Once you upgrade, you have Windows 10 for free on that device.

Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 enterprise offerings outside of this offer. To check for compatibility and other important installation information, visit your device manufacturer’s website and the Windows 10 Specifications page.

and according to the little icon - the check of system and apps - everything will work
That is really interesting given that quite a few of my programs won't run on Win 8.1 according to that upgrade assistant and at least one device will have serious and possibly fatal problems
Note that this includes Office 2003

So why does the app check fail to flag it up - that is the gripe I have not the fact that it won't work
This makes the check useless as I have no idea which of my programs just won't work or won't work properly

Now this is really interesting in relation to Photoshop CS2
I went to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compatibilit...
For Win 7 recommend upgrade
For Win 8 compatible newer version available
For Win 8.1 compatible no action required
For Win 10 Technical Preview compatible no action required

Why aren't I Running Windows 8.1 UPDATE?

[re: Oldjim] [link to this post]

My Win 8.1 PC doesn't have that little Windows icon in its taskbar. So I looked at the Windows 10 FAQ which said I had to be running "Windows 8.1 Update" and directed me to check my version which said "This PC is running Windows 8.1" w/out the "Update".

Yet my PC is fully up to date (*). So for what reason could I possibly not be running "Windows 8.1 Update"?

* except for 1 Windows Update which keeps failing to install since 27/03/15: Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB3000850). Could that be the reason? How do I get it to install?

That's the very update needed. When it fails to install you will see an error :0xabcdefgh where 0xabc... is the error code number you need to google for the solution

Is it that you were not able to run Office 2003 in Win 8.1 but the indication was that you could in Win 10? I had understood that Office 2003 was no longer compatible even with Windows 7 so I now have Office 2013 which I dislike in many ways.

On Win 8.1 (64-bit) I can run Word 2002 (dunno about rest of Office) and Excel for Win 95 and they do everything I want smile.

When the time comes I shall try them on Win 10.

EDIT: Having now looked at Compatibility Center I see that Word 2002 is compatible up to & incl. Win 10, but Office XP 2002 is not even compatible from Win 7. Yet Word 2003 is not compatible from Win 8.
