Login issues with webmail

[link to this post]

I've mentioned this in passing before, but it's not a one-off, as I first thought. It's still doing it.

I am accessing my Free Online mail account via the web. A bit of a futile exercise, I know, as there's only ever spam in there, that doesn't seem to be successfully filtered.

So anyway, I tried to tag the latest crop as "spam", and got an error message: "You need to be logged in to access this page" and a button "Go to the login page".

The thing is, I must already be logged in, otherwise how am I looking at the contents of my inbox? So I logged in all over again, and tried exactly the same operation again (just flagging the crud as "spam"), and this time it comes back with: "Unknown user or password incorrect".

It's not a big deal to me, as I long ago stopped relying on PN mail. But on the assumption that some people might still be using it in earnest, I thought I'd mention it as a problem.

Hi,

What browser and operating system are you using? Does this happen if you use an alternative browser? If you raise a ticket on your account containing this information, the name of the mailbox you're accessing and step by step instructions as to what you're doing then we can try and replicate the problem and raise a problem if necessary.

Hi Bob,

I'm using IE6 + XP. I don't have an alternative browser, and won't be installing one (I use a work machine).

Thanks, but I must admit I can't really be bothered raising a ticket. I rarely used webmail after the second (or was it third?) time I lost all my mail, and once the previously closely-guarded address got into the hands of spammers, it was the final nail in the coffin, really. I only went there to check another problem a poster mentioned he was having, and it was then I noticed this strange business with the login errors.

Just thought you might like to know, because if the error messages are true, the implication is I'm somehow accessing my inbox without being logged in. Interesting.

T.

In reply to:

Hmmm, that's a little awkward. I'll have to see if I can find somebody in the office with a copy of IE6 installed. I know most of the machines have IE7. I'm sure our QA department can lend a helping hand though.

Just double-checked in case I misled you, but no, it's definitely IE6. Our firm didn't implement IE7 for some reason - can't remember why.

That does sound like an issue with IE's security settings to be honest, either regarding sessions or cookies. I'm not saying there's no possibility of a fault with webmail, but I've just been able to log in and stay logged in with both IE6 from a non-PN connection and IE7 from here in the office.

Hiya,

It is a problem specifically with flagging things as spam. I myself appear to stay logged in, until I attempt that. Deleting stuff, oddly enough, is OK (so far). It seems to be when I select several things, and attempt to designate them as "spam".

It's not every time, though. I'm not sure if whether they are read/unread has any kind of bearing on it.
