Drop in connection speed

[link to this post]

I'm just curious to find out why when i was getting connections of 5.5 it has now dropped to 4.1. This happened even before i replaced my router.

my line stats are
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4192 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 47.0 db 28.0 db
Noise Margin 9.1 db 22.0 db

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

I can't see any specific reasons for the drop in speed, though it did drop briefly to 2.5mb between christmas and the new year and has picked up since. Unfortunately lines may fluctuate due to changing noise levels, this can happen if BT work on the line somewhere or even if you plug in a new phone in your house.

The best way to up the speed is to ensure that the ADSL hardware is plugged into the master socket without any extension cables and that all other used sockets in the premises are filtered. Your profile should then update within a couple of days.

Hope that helps, let us know if not and we can look into it further for you.

It is possible that the automated systems have increased your default noise margin from 6dB to 9dB because of the problems when your rate droopped to 2500kbps
