BT Voyager 205 router with Vista

A friend of mine has a PlusNet-supplied BT Voyager 205 one-port router and has just bought a new PC, which runs Vista.

A quick web search implies that the 205 does not have Vista-compatible drivers for it - is anyone using a Voyager 205 with Vista ?

He might even have a Voyager 105 USB modem knocking about somewhere, although I can't imagine the news will be much better for that !

The Voyager 205 is a combined adsl modem/router. It doesnt need drivers if you attatch it via ethernet.

Use network cable (which should have been supplied with the router) in between the router and the ethernet port on the new PC.

The default IP address to get to the router config page is http://192.168.1.1

Then go to the config from the left hand menu.. follow the setup wizard entering the username in the format [email protected]

Any more info you may need is here, but iirc it auto puts that info in for you.

I think it's time for your friend to invest in a router.

Edit: hadn't realise the Voyager 205 actually is a router.

Why would they put that if, in theory, it should work fine ?

It's because the USB drivers aren't compatible with Vista.

Ethernet connections don't require drivers, so it should work fine.

An Ethernet adapter requires a driver in the same way as any other piece of hardware. However, as an Ethernet adapter is almost always available in a modern computer windows comes with the drivers built in in almost all cases.

Yes - the ethernet adaptor on the PC will obviously (presumably!) be fully functional.

Yes the router will work... whether Vista itself will work is a whole different subject
