Jungledisk and Amazon S3 ?

[link to this post]

Hi All

Is anyone using the above for their online offsite storage of data etc ?

If so are there any bandwidth usage issues I would need to be aware of bearing in mind if I go for the service I could initially be uploading something like 80GB ~ though I think bearing in mind upload speeds of ADSL I would do this in "chunks" anyway!

TIA for any insight.

Hi,

just having a quick look on the website I would be carefull of the total storage limit v the amount you can transfer at any one time period. The other thing to watch out for is the speed of your ADSL link. Mine is 2MB which means it downloads at 2Mb but only uploads at about 240Kb due to the way ADSL works.

You may find it easier just to use a USB hard drive or an a flash memory stick as it is unlikely your PC / Laptop and the USB drive would faill at the same time.

The other option could be a twin drive NAS box setup in a mirrored raid. This way there would effectively be 3 copies of the data. The added benefit is that this would be networked so could be used by any machine on the network.

Personally I use a single drive NAS (Buffalo Linkstation Live) with the included backup software sitting in the background on my PC's creating 'near instant' backups for me.

Thanks both for the feedback.

I already keep more than one HDD copy (digital picture files) but as it is not always easy to take one off site everyday it was the offsite aspect with the fact that once the intial backup is done using Jungledisk only changed/new files are backed up (storage and weekly/monthly transfers being big/low by ratio).

Oh a NAS box is on my list for inhouse use sometime later in the year.

In other words the backup strategy IMO needs a reliable offsite component!

One thing I am going to try is windows home server. I have a trial copy on its way in the post. With that you can tell it to duplicate your data on different hard drives. Also it would give you easy access that you can manage to your files from anywhere on the internet. Having said that if off site storage is important then a service like the one you have mentioned should fit the bill.
