Hi
After nearly 6 years, I feel it is time to move on from Plusnet and find pastures new. However, I have just have a few questions before I leave:
1) When I ask for my MAC code what happens to my account? Does it automatically get downgraded to a free dialup account and stay active or do I need to request this when I request me MAC.
2) Once downgraded, what do I need to do to keep the account 'live'. Do I need to frequently log into the portal or webmail (or both)? Are there any warnings if I forget to do this?
3) In the future, should I wish to return to Plusnet, would I be able to then upgrade the dormant account back to a full broadband account?
4) After migration, I understand that referrals will continue to accrue on the account (even though it has been downgraded) and get paid when they reach 5.00. Is this correct? Is it still possible to continue to add to my referrals as well?
Thanks to all you guys (both forum regulars and Plusnet staff) for the help and service over the years. At times it has been a bumpy ride but on the whole, for a light user, the service from my point of view has been good.
Cheers
Speccy

Hi there,
Is there any particular reason you're thinking of leaving? Anything I can help with?
To answer your questions:
When you ask for a MAC you need to request that your account is downgraded to a PAYG dial up account. To then keep it active you need to collect email or dial up at least every 90 days.
If you want to come back in the future you can upgrade the dial up account back to broadband simply by raising us a ticket and giving us your MAC.
Your referrals will be paid as you say every time the total reaches 5, and you can add as many more referrals as you like whilst on the PAYG product.
Hope that helps, and give me a shout if there's anything more I can help you with.

My understanding:
1. Nothing happens immediately since you might not use the MAC, in which case your account continues unchanged.
It used to be the case that you needed to request the downgrade to the PAYG at the time of your MAC request, or at least before the migration was effected.
2. Dialling up works, and accessing your email works (presumably webmail, or POP3). I don't recall how often you need to do this. I don't know if accessing the portal itself has any effect.
3. Yes.
4. I don't know for sure, but I would have thought so.

Hi Mand
Thanks for your reply and for your offer of help. There is no reason for me to move to a new ISP except that I fancied a change. Therefore, there is little you can do as there is nothing broken to fix!!
However, there is no reason why I shouldn't want to return in the future. Hence my questions about keeping the account active.
All the best and don't break anything in case I do want to come back

Thanks Dusty.
The points were based on my understanding of this and you seemed to have the same opinions.
Mand has confirmed these to be correct.

Thinking of going to O2 as I have recently moved my mobile contract to them. They seem to generally be happy customers over on the forums.
I might get slightly faster speeds but probably not by much due to my distance from the exchange.

similar position to you - absolutely no reason to leave - but having taken the iPhone plunge if o2 ever enable my exchange then the cost implication would be too great to ignore

I know ... I know ... I've been warned
I'm a server engineer and I forget how many times have I made that little tweek to make things just a bit faster or smoother and then thought 'Oh i wish .....'. Usually it's on a Friday afternoon!!!!
I'll never learn

Its called optimism over experience.
We are all prone to it.

They seem to enjoy scheduling changes to key business systems with no notice at the last minute late on a Friday. The best way to get them to behave is ask them all to officially sign it off and normally you watch how fast they run
(By they I did not mean any person / business in particular ! ! )
