Nuisance Phone Calls

[link to this post]

What is PN's policy in respect of customers who have the phone package receiving nuisance phone calls?

I hadn't seen that so thanks for the link. I'm posting on behalf of my (problem customer) friend. She lives alone and has been receiving silent calls. She doesn't have CLI and when she tries to retrieve the callers number she is told the number is unavailable.

She has spoken to PN who have told her there is nothing they can do, and that she should contact the Police. I doubt the Police would be interested. I was just interested to know if PN have any ability to monitor a phone line?

CLI would've told her excatly the same.

In this link Ofcom mention anonymous call rejection, don't know whether PN can provide it or not.

This wasn't offered. However an offer to change her phone number for a £30 fee was.

Hi wingco1,

Sorry you weren't offered anonymous call reject, I assure you we can arrange that for your friend if you/she wishes? Normal cost is £4/month but we'll happily add it free for the first month to give it a chance and see if it solves the problem.

If that's something you'd be interested in please drop me a PM with the ticket ID/username in and I'll get it sorted for you. I'll be feeding back on what you've been saying so far as well.

"anonymous call reject" sounds very useful, but I wonder if it would automatically reject all calls from overseas including legitimate calls?

(hope I'm not intruding on someone else's discussion smile )

Anonymous Call Rejection lets you bar incoming calls from callers who withhold their number (this won't block calls where the number is unavailable for other reasons)

Thanks Wingco. In my case the nuisance (often silent) calls seem to come from abroad, from people who want to repair non existent faults on my computer or the like, so I guess wouldn't be stopped by ACR.

I find that Caller ID tells me if a caller is "International".
I just ignore these calls and when my Answerphone kicks in the caller puts the phone down.
The people I want to accept calls from are all in my Phonebook on the phone.
The TPS (Telephone Preference Service) screens out most sales calls from UK
telephone marketing companies.

Yes, and I count that as unavailable.

I have a friend who uses one of these prefix suppliers who shows as "International", so it isn't always true.

TPS still has jurisdiction over UK firms that call in from overseas, so it might be worth getting a Co. name.

Even paying BT £4 per month for anonymous caller reject will not stop International anonymous calls, let alond silent and sales/scam calls. One box will stop the lot. http://www.truecall.co.uk/

I use this method too, you can of course end up with messages on the answer phone from companies that use recorded messages instead of real people. (Had quite a few of these from the US recently, around every other day for about two weeks).
