I'm not going mad.... am I?

I'm currently looking at a relative's Plus net line. Their speeds don't quite seem right.
They are very close to the exchange and their router (Voyager 2110) gives the following info:
Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 9167 Kbps 96 Kbps
Noise Margin 4.9 dB 6.0 dB
Line Attenuation 8.0 dB 0.5 dB
Output Power 0.0 dBm 11.8 dBm

Surely 8dB of attenuation should give 20+Mb/s, and they should certainly be getting more than 96Kb/s of upstream?
But the noise margin doesn't suggest a noisy line (and they've not experienced any audible interference....)

Thoughts? (other than raise a ticket!)

The noise margin suggests a lot of noise limiting the sync. I recommend running routerstats, or DMT.

What's the speed like in the test socket behind the master, with nothing else connected to the phone line?

The upstream speed is a disaster - I suggest trying the test socket and a new filter
Alternatively they may have an unfiltered phone/sky box etc.

There's a single extension which runs the router and DECT phone.
I'd forgotten about the filter - I'll give that a shot. And I'll also try the router direct into the master socket (would have done that before a ticket anyway!)

Not the master socket! The Test socket on the wall at the back when you (gently) remove the faceplate .

Check if the ring wire is connected to the master faceplate and gently disconnect it. Don't cut it.

Tried it in the test socket, no difference to the connection statistics.

Can you post the stats from the test socket?

I assume that on changing connection to Test Socket that you powered down the router so that it will have re-set itself. Sometimes I have found my router seems to get stuffed with clutter and needs a power-down re-set to clear.

I had to physically move the router and use a different power socket, so it got a reset and had to reconnect.
