Plusnet telling me porkies in order to keep me here?

[link to this post]

Informed plusnet that I'm moving to talktalk who have just llu'ed my exchange because I want to take advantage of the greater speeds I can get on LLU and talktalk are the only provider who offer this on my exchange.

Here is the text I got this morning from Plusnet verbatim:

"thankyou for your enquiry in regards to the speeds we will be able to give you the same speeds as what talktalk can provide this is because we all run on the same wires although it is a different provider if you would like to upgrade your speeds please contact our technical team"

Has your exchange also recently been enabled for wbc?

My rural exchange has just had talk talk go live and we have also just had wbc go live

You have only posted an answer to something from Plusnet, so no one knows if the answer is out of context to what you have posted.

If you post all of the conversation, word for word, it may explain the answer.

Apologies - Plusnet got in touch and asked me why I was leaving to which I replied this:

"Hi

The only reason I am leaving is because TalkTalk have just LLU`ed my exchange so I can now get a much faster speed. I have had no problems at all with plusnet and will certainly be happy to rejoin if and when Plusnet LLU is available on my exchange. "

This was the message I sent that preceeded the text I recieved this morning.

Please can you post your full line stats. Those will tell us how much faster TalkTalk can take you.

Almost certainly. Maybe OP could post the ticket number and I'm sure a rep could pick it up and try to ensure some "correction" is given.

On a long line I guess the download speeds could be similar (adsl1 v adsl2+) and also upload speeds if PlusNet uncap the upstream rate for you.

As RobertoS said it is essential to post your router stats in order to determine whether you were misinformed by PlusNet.

Have you considered another ISP who uses TalkTalk kit at the exchange? Another ISP's broadband may be more expensive than TT's broadband but you will get equivalent speeds and you will not be tied to full LLU (MPF) if you go for partial LLU (SMPF) if available.

At least with LLU you'll avoid BT's IP profile management and the "catch up" IP profile system from Plusnet tongue

You are right there Alistair - my download sync rate was substantially increased ( 8128K to 13901K) after I moved from PN adsl1 to xilo/uno partial LLU (TTB SMPF) smile

Hi

I should just say I`m not really trying to have a go at plusnet here - I`ve been with them years and they have always been brilliant as far as I`m concerned. I also think its most likely someone who doesnt fully understand the different technologies but I thought it was worth flagging up just in case it happened again.

My line stats are:

Uptime: 1 day, 6:03:17
DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A
Channel mode: Fast
Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 988 / 8,128
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 8,128
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/GB]: 0.00 / 2.59
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 11.5 / 11.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 4.0 / 8.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 22.0 / 8.0

Hi Footys,

I've just checked the ticket on your account and while it isn't ideal (there's an element of confusion which I will be feeding back on) you haven't quite quoted it verbatim.

I'm glad to say the agent did use capital letters and punctuation, and whilst the initial paragraph does state that "we will be able to give you the same speeds as what talktalk can provide" you've missed a bit out of the second paragraph: "If you would like to see if we can upgrade your speeds please contact our technical team on 0800 432 0200".

I understand what you're saying, and whilst we can match LLU speeds on 21CN enabled exchanges unfortunately we can't as yours is 20CN only. I'll make sure the agent is advised as such, and sorry about that.

With those stats no ISP using BT standard ADSL technology could get the raw connection possible via LLU ADSL2+. The only caveat is that raw connection speeds are only part of the story and TalkTalk have had a poor reputation for their throughput capabilities (and support). I think someone else suggested looking at a provider that uses TalkTalk wholesale rather than going direct to TalkTalk.

(Have to caveat that I have also seen some people recently saying TalkTalk are fine so it may be that their reputation is improving or maybe some people just got lucky).

Hi Orbrey

I said that I quoted the text I recieved verbatim not the ticket.

They were worded diffferently - I only checked the ticket after receiving the text.

Thanks for your reply and clarification anyway. - it was no big deal and as I said I have always found plusnet fantastic and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

ian72,

I wonder if TT's full LLU broadband throughput is relatively sluggish because all sites visited have to be initially checked by their whitelist and blacklist filtering system?

Strange stats. Unless things are different on IPSC, but I wouldn't have thought so.

On that attenuation on LLU or WBC if it was available you should connect at well over 20Mbps if they don't cap it at that.

The strange bit is that on ADSL Max/IPStream I would expect the downstream noise margin to be sky-high at the moment. Maybe things have moved on since then.

Hi,
I've used four ISPs over the years and Plusnet is easily the best value. £6.49 a month for speeds around 13 - 15Mbps and 10GB monthly allowance (unlimited midnight to 8am). I suggest you have a look at the Service Provider Comparison before you switch, if it's not too late. Also remember your router/modem probably needs to be ADSL2+ compatible to take advantage of higher line speeds, or you might need a firmware upgrade.
I find the biggest hindrance to performance is waiting for sites to respond

Ah, cheers Footys - sorry, didn't take text literally as a text message and assumed you meant the text on the ticket. My bad.

I'm glad I've fed back on it though, it's easy enough to check before posting to say whether we can arrange something for a customer or not.

Most importantly, I'm glad you're still happy - thanks very much smile

Hi

Its not just the faster speeds as the reason I`m leaving - with the advent of services like lovefilm and netflix on my xbox as well as my wifes ipad we have started to notice our usage going over my 60gig limit - I think a 60gig peak time limit is going to become less and less sustainable as more and more online streaming companies crop up.
