UNDERWELMED!

The BT guy come round this morning to change my FTTC modem. I did a speed test just after he left and got a download speed of 9.1 Mbps. Click below for the full grizzly details:

There are people with a standard copper connection that are getting higher data transfer rates than this.

Stop the press, all is forgiven. Done the test again and got a whopping 14.8 Mbps!! However that comment about being slower than folk with a copper connection still stands!

What speeds where you getting before the modem swapout?

The first was as he just left. Then I realised I was using not using an n speed wireless connection. So I used n speed at 5.0Ghz on wide band right next to my Airport Extreme box (about a metre) and got the second reading.

So why not try a speed test wired not wireless

Use a wired connection. Try the BT Java speedtest @ http://speedtester.bt.com/ and tell us the IP profile.

So was it a new install or a swap of the modem? If it's a swap what speeds were you getting *before* the swap?

I did a speed test direct (via cable) to the modem, missing out my AirPort Extreme, using an unused user account on Uni body macbook 13". I did the test just before 19:00 and got 14.6Mb/s. I am not sure what the speed was before the modem was swopped out but I feel it was about the same. I wonder what speed I would get if I did the test when I get back from work on Sunday morning around 4:00am?
