PPoE with PlusNet and an unlocked Huawei HG612

[link to this post]

Anyone know how to setup an unlocked Huawei to use PPoE HG612 with Plusnet?

I have followed a few leads but got nowhere.

My one is unlocked ( very easy) but I am having trouble getting to use the PPoE setting to connect.

You mean get the HG612 to do the PPP so that it appears plain Ethernet to your router/PC?

If so I am interested too as I assumed this could be done and would be useful too if stable because some routers have less than perfect PPP reliability so offloaded it to the HG612 (whose CPU is likely vastly under utilised in bridge mode) would be useful.

However everyone I have seen so far still uses PPPoE on a separate ethernet router, so its unclear if/how this can be achieved.

BUT, it should be possible to have it in Bridge Mode PPPoE (there is a mode called that but apparently it doesn't do what I thought it did).

I'm not sure about the person who started this thread, but what I want to do is have the HG612 handle the PPPoE connection but still bridge that over LAN1 so I can have a more open dedicated router handle the NAT.

Theoretically it should be possible, as its not much more complicated than plain Bridge mode. The question is IF the GUI lets you configure it that way.

Yes, Exactly. I want to use the PPPoE function of the Huawei to connect to Plusnet. Then a clear IP connection to my network.

I know how to set the PPPoE session - it just does not connect.
It works fine in its default setting though. Hence my question. Maybe I need to adjust another setting somewhere.

Anyone know how?

True, but that means the HG612 is doing more processing than necessary, it would still "technically" be a double NAT. There is always a possibility of the HG612 NAT functionality interfering with something.

Its likely my last resort if I cannot get it to work.

Incidentally I am talking future tense here because I am in the unique position that my ISP currently does not use PPPoE for my connection but I will be migrated over to the PPPoE platform soon. This is why I am looking at a solution to make it appear to my router that nothing has changed when the changeover happens.

Perhaps it might be sensible to declare that you are using a Digital Region service, Alex?

I didn't mention it because its not important to this thread (in fact it would just confuse things seeing as this is in the PlusNet forum) as the only difference being that Digital Region use a different VLAN ID.

I suppose it DOES explain why I currently do not use PPPoE but will do soon. But the point being that if it works for PlusNet, it will work for Digital Region, vice versa, as the problem is trying to figure out how to get it to work.

If you are on ADSL with Plusnet at present than PPPoE may well not work as the internet connection has to be PPPoA

No, as pointed out I am not on PlusNet at all. My post was just in support of finding out how to get PPPoE to work in preperation for when I am on a service that works the same was as PlusNet/BT Fibre does.

So what was wrong with the Fibre forum, or any of the other FTTC supplying ISPs here? Is there something special about BT and Plusnet with PPPoE?

My domains, website and mail hosting - Tsohost. Internet connection - Plusnet Value Fibre.

How about downloading and reading the Huawei HG612 User Manual?
