New appointment required - BT Issue. Review On 03-Jul-2012

Re: BT show but now its slow

[re: deleted] [link to this post]

Hi, some help needed if possible, the FTTC was installed yesterday by BT, and as of now it is all over the place, is this normal? It started off racing at 26mb speedtests, and then gradually got slower and slower, down to under 5mb, our old ADSL2 was around 9-10mb.

BT Speedtester shows anywhere between 7-26mb the sync is 38.71mb, the thinkbroadband speedtest is showing 34mb (see sig) but web browsing is really slow, opening this page took about a minute. I needed a 1740kb file last night and it took 8 minutes to download.

Plusnet to there credit are saying it will bed in, there speed estimate was 38mb, BT was 44mb, I am about 550mtrs from the cabinet following the road on Google Maps.

I have the technicolor router, which seems ok, but I am tempted to go and get an N600 router to increase the speed in the house. Anyone any thoughts or comments, is this all normal on FTTC?

Thanks

Lisa

I have tried both, The thinkbroadband speedtest was done wired to the router, but web browsing was still painful even when wired.

Hi there,

Looking at the result in your signature it seems it's improved somewhat? I hope that's the case. If you'd like us to look into it for you we'd be more than happy to, if you could post a ticket number or PM me with your username.

As Orbrey says. I'm posting about a minor technicality smile. That 38.71 is the (rounded) IP Profile. Looks like your sync is a fraction under 39999kbps, as IIRC that gives, (unless they've started rounding down recently), 38.72Mbps. Earlier versions showed 38717kbps.

I think with the help of the excellent Plusnet, it would appear that the router is defective, when we hardwire a laptop to the router, the BT speedtest is showing 38.5mb, on the same laptop change to wireless and it drops to between 10-20mb. We changed all the wireless channels and tried them and no improvement at all, so a new router is on its way, thank you for great service Plusnet.

FYI, the PC hardware in use can affect the speed of broadband connetion. A laptop (usually being of lesser spec than a desltop) will quite possibly get a slower speed. Of course, we're talking a fair difference in spec. Laptops also slow down quite substatially if they're overloaded with system startup processes.
