Laptops usually have very good hardware when it comes to networking. They are, after all, designed to be used on the move.

FYI, the PC hardware in use can affect the speed of broadband connetion. A laptop (usually being of lesser spec than a desltop) will quite possibly get a slower speed. Of course, we're talking a fair difference in spec. Laptops also slow down quite substatially if they're overloaded with system startup processes.

I really have to disagree. Laptops generally have better built in wifi than desktops. Many laptops have multiple antennas built in....Desktops often end up using those cheap usb dongles with very small antennas.

Also start up processes... Again most systems purchased within the last sort of 2 years will have 2 gb of ram or above and core 2 duo or above.
On these systems even with over 100 running processes, the network is unlikely to slow down much.

The system will boot slower but after 15 mins or so, there's going to be no real difference in download speed than if those startup processes were disabled.

If the system is affected so badly by the startup processes, firstly it's probably a few years old. Secondly probably has limited ram & a slow processor... But most of all probably wont have wireless N built in... IN which case disabling absolutely every startup process aint gonna help. It'll be cripped by the G card.

Generally most laptops with N built in are not more than 2 yrs old & can handle startup fine. With ram so cheap nowadays this isn't such a problem now.

Unless they bought a netbook,

these would not handle infinity wireless.
