recently changed to Business option 3, my router stats are:
DSL type ITU-T G992.1
Bandwidth (up/down) 8 / 5.216
Line att (up/down) 17.0 / 28.0
SN Margin (up/down) 28.0 / 6.9
I have been told this morning that I am only on ADSL as my figures show my line will only support about 8Mb. I was expecting more than this, am I correct? I have asked to be put on ADSL2 which will apparantly take up to 48 hours
Thanks for any guidance given.

I have replied to your post in the Plusnet forums but to repeat here
I would suggest trying the test socket and report the stats.
The reason for this is that with that attenuation you should be getting higher speeds even on ADSL1 - probably 7150kbps as your line is almost certainly interleaved

I will certainly do that but i belive BT did not connect the socket correctly some years ago as even with the faceplate off my phone extensions still work! I believe to be correct taking the faceplate off should disconnect everything else?

If your exchange is 21CN WBC enabled then you should get a downstream sync of ~14500Kbps on adsl2+, possibly a little less if you choose annex M.

Indeed it should
This could well mean that your internal wiring is affecting your line speed

As oldjim says.
But bandwidth up = 8?
Incidentally, G.992.1 is ADSL, G.992.3 is ADSL2 (which isn't what you mean or want), and G.992.5 is ADSL2+. (Which is what you want).
But!!!!!
It is essential to get that wiring fixed. It is almost certainly what is causing your low speed.
You will also need a rerun of the "10-day training" after you get proper speeds, as the MSR (Maximum Stable Rate) and FTR (Fault Threshold Rate) will need resetting, to avoid hassle in the future if something goes faulty.

ok, had an Openreach engineer in to do master socket, now all extensions disconnect when I remove the faceplate! Speed still hovering between 6 and 7.5Mb but I am still getting the router disconnecting on an almost daily basis. I've changed all filters, am I likely to see an improvement if I fit an adaptor faceplate, http://www.clarity.it/xcart/product.php?productid=16...
or do I just plug the router into the test socket and see what happens? Obviously that creates a problem as I will have no phone!

No, you can plug a microfilter into the test socket then plug the router and phone into that.

As kasg says, then you will have a phone at the master socket but no extensions. Just for a day or so to see if that fixes things.
Please can we have two new sets of stats? One before you alter anything, then another using the test socket.

ok, the stats are before:
time connected 2 days 13 h 27m
bandwidth up/down 1.212 7.997
line att up/down 16.6 31.0
sn margin up/down 6.2 5.9
After:
time connected 0 days 0 h 13m
bandwidth up/down 1.197 14.634
line att up/down 16.5 30.5
sn margin up/down 5.8 3.5
these were taken from the master socket with no phones attached.
Thanks for all your help.

Well . Quite a considerable improvement. It's now on ADSL2+ and above average for that attenuation. Though still well below good. Are you getting a decent result from a speed test now?
Interestingly the noise margin is 3.5dB. That could be adding 1Mbps or so to the connection speed, and the average I mentioned is taken at 6dB, so that means yours is probably about average.
I suggest now you put the faceplate back on and see what that gives. But no later than 6pm, in other words straight away. Otherwise wait till after 8am.
If we get comparable figures we just need to see if we can find some more speed. It we get considerably worse figures we need to find out why.
Do you use any plug-in phone extension cables?

OOps - was that at the master socket, which is what you said, or the test socket which I "understood" because that was what I expected.
